  • READ MORE: The eerie deep sea creatures that are hardly ever seen by humans

A rare oarfish that is said to predict ‘something bad is going to happen’ has washed up on a beach in the Canary Islands.

Oarfish are often interpreted as a bad omen when seen outside of their natural habitat – the depths of the ocean.

The sea creature was discovered by bathers on 10 February and has sparked worries online.

A video of the fish appearing on the beach has over nine million views on Instagram so far, as reported by NeedToKnow.

In the video, a man wearing swim shorts goes up to a silver creature with its translucent orange fins to rescue it.

The oarfish, known in Japanese mythology as Ry*g* no tsukai – or ‘messenger of the Sea God’ – has historically been linked to anticipating catastrophic events such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis and cyclones.

It is difficult to study due to its normal habitat deep in the sea.

This particular oarfish was found on the coast of Playa Quemada on the Canary Islands.

The sighting in the Canary Islands comes just weeks after a similar fish sparked fears on a beach in Mexico.

Surfers spotted the creature on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula.

The massive fish, about as long as a surfboard, featured a silvery-blue body with a stunning red fin trailing down its back but had an injured tail.

They can measure up to 36 feet in length and weigh over 441 pounds.

Legend has it that the fish are harbingers of earthquakes and other natural disasters.

A local who witnessed the scene in Mexico said: ‘They say those fish appear when there is going to be a very strong tsunami.’

The Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, Comrade Kuku Isaiah Eromidayo, has called for justice after a violent attack at his home in Igando, Lagos State, left him injured and his pregnant wife traumatized.

Eromidayo, in a statement released on Tuesday and obtained by SaharaReporters, alleged that a group of armed men, led by a known ex-convict, invaded his home on Saturday, October 4, 2025, around 2:00 p.m., in what he described as an “unprovoked and life-threatening attack.”

“On Saturday, 4th October 2025, at about 2:00 p.m., some miscreants violently invaded my residence located at No. 47, Jamaica Street, Agric Road, Igando, Lagos State,” Eromidayo stated.

“During the unprovoked attack, I was physically assaulted and injured with a cutlass, while my pregnant wife was also terrified and traumatized by the incident.”
He alleged that the principal assailant was one Adeola Asela, whom he identified as “an ex-convict with a known criminal record”.

“The principal aggressor in this attack was one Adeola Asela, an ex-convict with a known criminal record who was previously involved in a robbery case at Iba in 2021, where I resided before relocating to my current address,” the student leader said.

“Adeola is being harbored and aided by one Mr. Taiye, popularly known as ‘Stubborn’, who is notorious in our community for harboring criminal elements and drug traffickers in his father’s house on the same street.”

According to the NANS spokesman, the attack did not end there. Later that same night, the alleged assailants returned, accompanied by armed hoodlums, and vandalized his property.

“Later that same night, the same Adeola, in company with armed hoodlums, including one Lekan in our street, and Mr. Taiye (Stubborn) returned to my house and vandalized my property, further endangering my family’s safety,” Eromidayo said.

“This malicious act has left us in a state of fear and insecurity, as we continue to receive threats and harassment from these individuals and their associates.”

In one of the photos obtained by SaharaReporters, Eromidayo identified Asela as the individual wielding a cutlass.

The student leader appealed to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, the AIG Zone 2, Onikan, and the Department of State Services (DSS) to intervene urgently and ensure that justice is served.

“In view of the above, I earnestly appeal for your urgent intervention and a thorough investigation into this matter,” he pleaded.

“I trust that your esteemed office will take appropriate measures to ensure that justice prevails, the perpetrators are brought to book, and the safety of my family is guaranteed.”

The letter was officially copied to the Lagos State Police Command, AIG Zone 2, and the DSS.

A disturbing incident unfolded in Amala Autonomous Community, Ngor-Okpala LGA, on December 7, 2025, when armed assailants stormed the roadway, opened fire on a Toyota Highlander, and forcefully whisked away the occupants of a Lexus RS300.

The attackers were said to have emerged suddenly from a nearby bush path, shooting the driver of the Highlander—who was later confirmed dead at the hospital—before escaping with their abducted victims.

Officers from the Ngor-Okpala Division swiftly cordoned off the scene, evacuated the injured driver, and initiated a coordinated manhunt alongside other security agencies and local vigilante outfits.

A wide-ranging search-and-rescue mission is now underway, with joint operatives combing the Amala forest corridor and tracking potential suspects. Investigators report that early progress has been made, and efforts to rescue the kidnapped individuals are continuing with renewed momentum.

SEE VIDEO: MIDNIGHT CARNAGE IN LILU: GUNMEN RAZE ANGLICAN CHURCH, KILL PRIEST’S WIFE AND ONE OTHER

The quiet community of Lilu in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State was thrown into mourning on Sunday after armed assailants launched a devastating midnight attack on St. Andrews Anglican Church, leaving two people dead—including the wife of the resident priest—and destroying several buildings within the church premises.

The attackers reportedly stormed the church compound in the early hours of the morning, firing sporadically and setting fire to multiple structures. The assault came just as some early worshippers were preparing for the day’s service. Witnesses said the gunmen moved with brutal precision, torching vehicles, the priest’s residence, and other facilities as frightened residents fled for safety.

By Monday morning, when journalists arrived to assess the destruction, what was once a vibrant centre of worship had been reduced to ruins. Charred vehicles, shattered roofs, burnt personal items, and lingering smoke told the story of a night filled with terror. The church compound, normally bustling with worshippers, stood eerily quiet—its silence a stark reminder of the violence that occurred.

One eyewitness, still visibly shaken, recounted the chaos:
“They came in shooting everywhere. Everything was burning—cars, buildings, even the priest’s house. The priest’s wife and one other person were killed. Many were injured. It was like something from a nightmare.”

Residents expressed deep concern over the severity of the attack and lamented the lack of nationwide attention to what they described as a direct assault on their community and faith.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the tragic incident. Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had strongly condemned the violence, calling it “utterly wicked and intolerable.” He noted that the CP has ordered intensified intelligence operations, strengthened joint security deployment, and enhanced surveillance across the area to prevent further occurrences.

Ikenga extended condolences on behalf of the Command to the bereaved families and the entire Lilu community. He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations as security agencies move to track down the perpetrators.
