Kwara: Police confirm murder of Miyatti Allah leader, order investigation

The Kwara State Police Command on Sunday confirmed the murder of Alhaji Idris Abubakar, the chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Kwara State, who was shot dead on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the entrance of his residence in Oke Ose, Oke-Oyi, Ilorin East Local Government Area of the state.

A statement by the spokesperson of the command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, in Ilorin on Sunday, said police detectives responded swiftly and recovered five expended 7.62mm shells, while his remains have been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Mortuary.

The State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, has also launched a full investigation into the bloody incident, with the Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, assuring that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. He urged the public to remain calm and provide useful information.

Idris was reportedly shot dead at about 10 p.m. by unknown gunmen while entering his house in Oke Ose town.

His janazah was conducted on Sunday at his Zango-Kulende residence, and he has been buried.

A statement on Sunday by the Miyetti Allah Association’s Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Muhammad Kangodabe, announcing the passing of Idris, said, “With deep sorrow, we announce the tragic passing of our esteemed chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Kwara State chapter, Alhaji Idris Abubakar Sakaina, who was killed by unknown gunmen yesterday at 10 p.m.”

The body prayed that Allah grants his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.

​The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has extended warm felicitations to the Muslim faithful across Nigeria on the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.

​In furtherance of his commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment during the festive period, the Inspector-General has directed Commissioners of Police and Tactical Commanders across all states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory to implement robust security arrangements.
​Operational measures include:
​Strategic deployment of tactical teams and intelligence operatives.

​Deployment of the Special Intervention Squad and conventional police personnel to Eid prayer grounds and critical infrastructure.
​Increased presence at highways, motor parks, recreational centers, and other public spaces to ensure peaceful, hitch-free celebrations.

​The IGP has also ordered heightened visibility policing, coordinated patrols, enhanced surveillance operations, and intelligence-led stop-and-search duties. These actions are aimed at proactively deterring criminal activities and ensuring a swift response to any emerging threats.

​IGP Disu calls on members of the public to remain vigilant, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the following emergency lines:
