National Assembly left many lawmakers poorer – Ex-Kebbi senator Na’Allah

Former senator representing Kebbi South, Bala Ibn Na’Allah, has claimed that, contrary to popular belief, many members of the National Assembly end up financially worse off after their tenure in office.

Na’Allah, who served as Deputy Majority Leader in the 8th Senate, said several lawmakers enter politics expecting to amass wealth but end up poorer. He made the remarks during an interview on Trust Television’s 30 Minutes programme.

“Some of them ventured into the National Assembly believing that it is a place to make money, only to discover that they are going to end up poorer,” Na’Allah said.

The former lawmaker challenged the perception that public office guarantees financial comfort.

“Mannir, I am giving you this assignment,” he told the host. “Go back to your constituency or anywhere you know people occupying public office, especially the House of Representatives and the Senate.

“Tell me one senator or one member of the House of Representatives who had nothing before joining politics and who, after leaving politics after one year, can even afford the children’s school fees.”

Ekwutosblog gathered that Na’Allah lost his re-election bid to the Senate in 2023, as he was defeated by Garba Maidoki, who polled 75,232 votes while he scored 70,785.

The factional National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nafiu Bala Gombe, has announced that the party under his leadership will bar individuals above the age of 55 from contesting for political positions.

Gombe made the disclosure during an interview with BBC Hausa, where he outlined a vision centred on generational change and greater youth participation in politics.

“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is a party that belongs to all Nigerians. What we are doing now is to ensure the party moves forward properly.

“We have decided that we will give the youths a real chance. The time has come for young people to take the lead in politics.

“If you are over 55 years old, you are not going to contest for positions in the ADC under our leadership.

“We want to bring in fresh blood, new ideas, and energy from the youth. Nigeria’s future depends on the young generation.

“The old ways have not worked well for the country. We need to open the door wide for youths to participate fully as candidates, leaders, and decision-makers,” he said.
