Troops kill seven ISWAP, Boko Haram terrorists in Rann, Damboa operations

Nigerian troops of Operation Hadin Kai have neutralised seven suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in separate operations in Rann and Damboa areas of Borno State.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Thursday.

Makama said he was informed by intelligence sources that the first encounter occurred on Wednesday when troops of 3 Battalion, in conjunction with Hybrid Forces and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), engaged the terrorists.

The terrorists were attempting to loot food items from a broken-down vehicle along the Gamboru–Ngala Main Supply Route near Rann.

However, the troops opened fire, killing six of the assailants and recovering two AK-47 rifles, each with a magazine.

One magazine contained four rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition while the other held six rounds.

In a separate operation, troops of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Molai, acting on credible intelligence, laid an ambush at the fringes of Komala village along the Maiduguri–Damboa road in Damboa Local Government Area.

The ambush, which targeted terrorists transiting towards Sambisa Forest, resulted in the death of one insurgent and the recovery of multiple motorcycles and improvised explosive device (IED) materials allegedly intended for burial.

Military sources described the operations as part of ongoing clearance efforts to deny terrorist groups freedom of movement within the theatre of operations.

Katsina: Peace deal in doubt as bandit leader attends dialogue with RPGs, AK-47s

Residents of Matazu Local Government Area have raised concerns following a peace dialogue held on Saturday between community leaders, Islamic clerics, and notorious bandit groups in the area.

Eyewitnesses reported that a notorious bandit leader attended the meeting armed with Rocket-Propelled Grenades, RPGs, General Machine Guns, GMGs, and AK-47 rifles, sparking anxiety among residents who continue to suffer frequent attacks.

Community leaders and clerics present at the talks expressed shock at the display of sophisticated weapons during what was meant to be a peace initiative.

“You came to a peace talk with AK-47 rifles, RPGs, and GMGs, and you return to the bush with the same weapons.

“How can this be called a peace deal?” a community leader asked, lamenting the recurring attacks that often escalate after such dialogues.

The clerics and local authorities stressed that for any genuine peace process to succeed, all parties must commit to laying down their arms without preconditions, prioritising the safety and security of residents above personal or group interests.

Residents further urged the government and security agencies to adopt stronger measures to ensure that future negotiations result in sustainable peace in the region.

Jordan reopens key West Bank border crossing after deadly shooting

Jordan on Sunday partially reopened the Allenby Bridge crossing with the Israeli-occupied West Bank, three days after a deadly gun attack forced its sudden closure.

Officials in Amman said the terminal is once again open for passenger travel but remains closed to cargo trucks “until further notice.”

State broadcaster Al-Mamlaka reported heavy traffic as travellers queued from the early morning to cross in both directions.

The Allenby Bridge, also known as the King Hussein Bridge, is a vital transit point for Palestinians, serving as their main route to travel abroad without passing through Israel, which has controlled the West Bank since the 1967 Middle East war.

The crossing was shut on Thursday after a Jordanian aid truck driver opened fire, killing twoIsraeli soldiers before being shot dead by Israeli forces.

Israeli authorities identified the assailant as Abdel Mutaleb al-Qaissi, 57, who had been contracted for only three months to deliver humanitarian supplies to Gaza, where a prolonged conflict has triggered a worsening humanitarian crisis.

Following the incident, Israel asked Jordan to halt the transfer of aid through the crossing while investigations continued.

Jordanian officials said they have launched a full investigation and described the attack as a threat to regional stability and to Jordan’s ongoing efforts to channel humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

“This act endangers the kingdom’s interests and undermines our ability to deliver aid to the people of Gaza,” a government statement read.

Former Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan says electoral manipulation remains one of the biggest threats in Africa.

Jonathan stated this at the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, GJF, democracy dialogue in Accra, Ghana

According to him, when democracy fails to meet people’s expectations, it can breed desperation and pave the way for authoritarianism.

He further stated that leaders must embrace democracy that secures a better future for children and ensures their voices are heard.

“Democracy in the African continent is going through a period of strain and risk of collapse unless stakeholders come together to rethink and reform it. Electoral manipulation remains one of the biggest threats in Africa.

“We in Africa must begin to look at our democracy and rethink it in a way that works well for us and our people. One of the problems is our electoral system. People manipulate the process to remain in power by all means,” he said.
