EFCC Probes Alleged $1bn NPA Account Diversion Linked to Former AGF MalamiThe Economic and Financial Crimes

Commission is investigating a whistleblower’s petition alleging the diversion of over one billion dollars from a purportedly cloned Nigerian Ports Authority bank account.

The petition, submitted on January 8, 2026, accuses former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), alongside senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Justice and a private businessman, of involvement in the alleged financial misconduct.
According to the whistleblower, the funds were allegedly kept in a cloned NPA account domiciled with a commercial bank in Lagos.

The petitioner claims he alerted authorities to the existence of the account in 2018 and was instructed to assist with efforts to recover the funds on behalf of the Federal Government.

The petition further alleges that rather than being recovered, the funds were diverted through unauthorized transactions. Those named in the petition include senior officials attached to the Ministry of Justice’s asset recovery unit and a private sector figure allegedly linked to the account.

The EFCC has acknowledged receipt of the petition and issued an official reference number, confirming that investigative processes are underway. No formal charges have been filed in connection with the allegations at the time of reporting.

The whistleblower’s legal representatives have also requested security protection, citing concerns for his safety as investigations continue.
The development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving Malami in separate matters, which he has consistently denied. The former minister has not yet issued a public response to the latest allegations.

Woman lays claim to abandoned baby rescued by man whom authorities allegedly now claim is the government’s child.

A woman has come out to claim the baby that was found abandoned in a bush in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Recall that LIB reported yesterday that a newborn baby with the placenta still attached was recovered by residents and a man within the area decided to pay for the child’s medical care after police officers who attended to the matter did not try to claim the baby.

Mr Okorom Ofuma then cried out that after paying for the baby to be placed in an incubator, for oxygen for the child, and other medical expenses, the child was revived from the edge of death and he decided to begin the formal process of adopting the baby.

However, he said authorities blocked his attempt at adopting the baby girl and told him the baby is the government’s child.

A woman who read the initial story on LIB’s online platform has now reached out claiming the child is hers.

She shared a video of herself today, Feb 26, confronting the hospital in Port Harcourt where she gave birth. She claimed the hospital lied to her that her child di£d only for her to now see her child online.

In a long chat with LIB, the woman, Naomi, narrated the complications before her pregnancy that led to her changing hospitals on the day she gave birth.

At the new hospital (which will not be named for now since it has not been verified that the accusations against the hospital are true), Naomi said they decided to carry out surgery, which she consented to.

As an orphan without any close living family member, her landlady was the one with her in the hospital.

After birth via CS, she said they took the baby away and she did not get to see the baby or find out the gender. According to her, the first scan she went for showed she was expecting a baby girl but the later scan showed a boy, so she assumed she had a son.

She claims that after surgery on May 9, 2025, her landlady told her the baby did not survive. When she confronted hospital staff, they told her the baby is alive and is being given medical care. She was then given a sedative that knocked her out.

A bride was shot during the ‘Jaimala’ ceremony at her wedding in Buxar district, Bihar.

The incident took place on Tuesday night, February 24, in Chausa Nagar Panchayat under the Mufassil police station area.

According to reports, the wedding procession had arrived from Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh. The rituals of the wedding ceremony was ongoing: the bride, 23-year-old Aarti Kumari, daughter of Nandiji Chaudhary, was on stage exchanging garlands with her groom, Avinash, 23, when a young man suddenly appeared and shot at the bride at close range.

The bullet hit the bride in the abdomen, leading to chaos at the venue. She was immediately taken to a private hospital.

Her condition is reported to be critical.

After firing the shot, the accused fled from the spot.

Some unconfirmed reports claim the gunman is her ex named Dinbandhu, 22. The bride reportedly named him after the shooting.

A family member said she initially mistook the shooting as firecrackers.

“We thought it was part of the celebration. I had gone home. Suddenly, we saw sparks near the stage. We thought people were bursting firecrackers. But when we reached there, Aarti had been shot and the groom was carrying her to take her to the hospital,” the relative said.

Another family member said they heard a gunshot before seeing Aarti collapse.

“He shot her and ran away. Her husband picked her up and rushed her to the hospital,” he added.

Aarti was first taken to a local hospital and later referred to Varanasi for further treatment.

Buxar Superintendent of Police Shubham Arya is personally supervising the investigation.

A special police team has been formed to track down the shooter. Further investigation is underway.
