VAR To Remain In Premier League As Clubs Vote To Retain Controversial System

Premier League clubs have chosen to retain the controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for the upcoming season.

At the league’s annual general meeting in Harrogate, 19 out of the 20 top-flight clubs voted in favor of continuing with VAR.

The only dissenting club, Wolves, had initiated the vote to scrap the system, citing concerns that VAR was “undermining the value of the Premier League brand” due to numerous contentious decisions.

Despite their efforts, the motion to abolish VAR did not pass, as it required 14 clubs to vote for its removal.

Introduced at the start of the 2019-20 season to help referees avoid clear errors, VAR has been a source of ongoing debate.

The 2023-24 season saw an increase in controversies, with managers and fans expressing growing dissatisfaction with the system’s implementation.

Transfer: It doesn’t matter – Ighalo speaks on Osimhen moving to Saudi Arabia

Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has said it does not matter whether his compatriot Victor Osimhen moves to Saudi Arabia now or in the future.

Ighalo, speaking with News Central, claimed that the option of moving to the Middle East would always be available to Osimhen.

“He knows what he wants. We were together two days ago, but we didn’t talk about football; we just had fun,” he said.

“I believe he knows what he wants; he’s grown, he’s worked hard, and if he calls me for a word, I’ll speak from my opinion, but any decision he makes, it’s a win-win for him.

“If he goes to Saudi now, if he doesn’t go until two years later, it doesn’t matter, because last year they came, he didn’t go; they came this year, he’s declined; they’ll still come again.”

Ighalo himself played in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Shabab, Al-Hilal, and Al-Wehda.
