The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, as part of his policy geared towards security of lives and property, most especially safety of schools and students, has announced the establishment of the Schools Protection Squad (SPS), a proactive initiative aimed at enhancing security and safety in educational institutions across Nigeria. In furtherance of the safety drives, the IGP has also concluded plans to launch a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) handbook for the Safe Schools Programme. The official launch and training event is scheduled to take place on 9th of August 2023, with the participation of 250 individuals drawn from various sectors, including the presidency, executive, judiciary, legislature, security agencies, civil society organizations, media, school administrators, unions, and other stakeholders.

The Schools Protection Squad (SPS) is a specialized unit within the Nigeria Police Force tasked with drawing up policies and engaging relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety and protection of students, teachers, and school infrastructure. The squad will be equipped with relevant assets and advanced training to effectively respond to security challenges facing educational institutions.

The launch of the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) handbook for the Safe Schools Programme is an integral part of the initiative. This comprehensive handbook outlines the best practices and guidelines for securing schools, risk assessment, emergency response protocols, and collaboration between various stakeholders. The SOP will serve as a crucial reference for educational authorities, security agencies, and other participants involved in the Safe Schools Programme, empowering them to take coordinated and effective measures in ensuring the safety and protection of schools.

The Inspector-General of Police hereby calls on all relevant stakeholders to actively participate and support the initiative for the safety and general well-being of our educational assets in Nigeria. The IGP similarly believes that through collaborative efforts and a united approach, Nigeria can build a robust education system that guarantees a secure and conducive learning environment for every child.

If integrity and nobility were a person’s name, it would be Chief Mike Ahamba – a thoroughbred intellectual of the highest order whose integrity permeates everything with nobility as its anchor.

Some time ago, he informed me — only a few people know this, that Mike Ahamba has been President Muhammad Buhari’s personal lawyer for over two decades and a member of his political inner circle.

He has led the legal team in all the president’s electoral cases, up to the Supreme Court.
However, in 2015, Dee Ahamba pursued a different political path, distinct from his friend’s.

Though their personal relationship remained cordial, they remained on different political sides through out the President’s 8 years tenure, as Dee Ahamba refused to compromise his integrity by supporting a presidency that conflicted with his political beliefs at the time.

Indeed, it was in Dee Ahamba the saying of my mentor and personal idol, Prof. Chinua Achebe came to be a reality — ‘One of the truest tests of integrity is its blunt refusal to be compromised’.

Today, on his birthday, we salute his courage in maintaining his impeccable integrity and standing up for what he considers right.

We wish him good health, longevity, and the courage to continue upholding his values.

Happy birthday, sir!

Nigeria Police Service Commission (PSC) on Wednesday urged President Bola Tinubu to promptly dismiss the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, accusing him of undermining the police recruitment process.

The PSC also refuted allegations of corruption leveled against it.

During a press briefing in Abuja, Adoyi Adoyi, Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) and Joint Union Congress of the PSC, expressed discontent over what he termed as false accusations against the Commission.

Over the weekend, the IGP, through a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, claimed that the recruitment process was riddled with irregularities and corruption.

Adoyi countered these claims, revealing that there was reliable information suggesting that elements within the police force had attempted to insert over 1,000 names into the recruitment list clandestinely.

“This action undermines the integrity of the recruitment process and the credibility of the police force,” Adoyi stated, urging the President to act swiftly to maintain the integrity of the nation’s police recruitment.
