BREAKING: El-Rufai accuses NSA Ribadu of acquiring ‘dangerous toxic chemicals’ from Poland
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has accused the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, under Nuhu Ribadu of procuring thallium sulphate, a highly toxic chemical compound, and has demanded urgent clarification over the alleged transaction.
El-Rufai made the allegation on Sunday in a post on X, where he shared a copy of a letter addressed to the Office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja.
“As part of my duty as a citizen, I wrote to the NSA to seek clarification on reports about the importation by his office of thallium sulphate, a very dangerous toxin. It’s a matter of concern if anyone brings in any poison, more so an odorless, colorless one,” El-Rufai wrote on X.
In the letter, he said information available to opposition political leaders indicated that the ONSA had reportedly procured approximately 10 kilograms of thallium sulphate from a supplier in Poland.
Describing thallium salts as highly toxic and tightly controlled substances, El-Rufai said public safety, democratic accountability and trust in national institutions required immediate clarification.
He requested details on the intended purpose and end-use of the chemical, the identity of the supplier, and whether the importation was carried out under an existing chemical or defence permit.
El-Rufai also sought clarification on the total quantity and specific form or concentration procured, as well as storage and security arrangements upon arrival.
The former governor further asked about regulatory oversight and coordination with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, including whether public-health risk assessments or hazard-mitigation plans had been developed.
“I am writing as a concerned citizen to seek clarification and reassurance regarding information available to the political opposition leadership about a procurement of approximately 10 kilograms of Thallium Sulphate by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), reportedly from a supplier in Poland,” parts of the letter read.
The Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, has disclosed that 18 vessels are currently offloading petroleum products and assorted cargoes at major ports in Lagos, including Apapa, Lekki and Tin Can Island.
In a cargo status update issued on Saturday, the authority said the ships are discharging a mix of commodities such as bulk fertiliser, general cargo, bulk sugar, petrol, bulk urea, condensate, gypsum and containerised goods.
An additional 46 vessels carrying petroleum products, food items and other imports are scheduled to arrive at Lagos ports between Saturday and February 22.
The NPA noted that the expected vessels will deliver a wide range of consignments, including general cargo, bulk urea, wheat, empty containers, crude oil, refined crude, gypsum, trucks, bulk gas, pallets, containerised goods, salt and petrol.
It added that seven ships have already reached the ports and are awaiting berthing approval. These vessels are laden with cargoes such as bulk urea, crude oil, diesel, aviation fuel, general merchandise and petrol.
Bashir El-Rufai has clarified that his father, Nasir El-Rufa’i, has never admitted to tapping anyone’s phone.
According to him, his father only stated that another person carried out the phone tapping and later passed the information to him without being asked.
He also appealed to the public not to misrepresent the issue in a way that could cause trouble for his father, urging people to stop attempting to implicate him.
He wrote on X: “He did not say HE tapped anybody’s phone. He alleged someone else did and unsolicitedly shared the information to him. No dey try help dem put my Papa for prison, abeg.”
His clarification comes after calls by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s aide on Information and Strategy, for an investigation into El-Rufa’i, citing the gravity of the former governor’s comments.
El-Rufa’i had previously stated on live television that he had information about a conversation on the NSA, Nuhu Ribadu’s phone.
His son, however, denied that his father had initiated the phone tapping.
Suspected Boko Haram fighters launched fresh attacks in parts of Borgu and Agwara local government areas of Niger State late last night.
According to renowned security reporter and analyst Comrade Zakari Y. Adamu Kontogora, who shared the disturbing incident on his Facebook page, the attackers moved from village to village, shooting residents and setting homes on fire.
He quoted security forces who spoke to his newspaper as saying that at least 21 people were confirmed dead after the gunmen stormed the Konkoso community.
The sources added that the attackers also invaded nearby villages, including Pissa, Zango and Tungan Maƙeri. Several people were reportedly killed, while houses and shops were burnt during the raids.
As of the time of filing this report, the gunmen were said to still be operating within the area, causing fear and panic among residents.
