‘Don’t hide behind TV, let’s settle in on street’ – Oshiomhole dares Abati

Published

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has issued a public challenge to former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, threatening a physical confrontation over what he deemed “mischievous” questioning on a TV show.

In an interview on Tuesday on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Oshiomhole expressed shock at Abati’s line of questioning directed at Ifeanyi Okowa, immediate past governor of Delta state, in a recent programme.

“I was particularly shocked that a senior editor could ask the immediate past governor of Delta state, Okowa, mischievously, I must say, with all due respect, ‘did you get permission from Oshiomhole that your sins will now be forgiven before you decided to decamp to APC?’” Oshiomhole said.

The former governor of Edo, Oshiomhole, criticised Abati for what he saw as an attempt to associate him with the political actions of others.

“How can you ask such a question? What is my role? I am part of the legislature. Is the legislature in charge of prosecuting anyone for wrongdoing?” Oshiomhole responded.

Oshiomhole also brought up Abati’s past, pointing out that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following his tenure as spokesperson for former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The man who made that statement was at a time invited by the EFCC after he was Jonathan’s spokesman, shamelessly. Thereafter, EFCC arrested him. Was I the one who granted him bail to leave PDP to go where he is?” He added.

The senator also expressed displeasure with Abati’s Labour Day remarks, accusing the veteran journalist of overlooking his contributions to the labour movement.

“Even on Labour Day, he talked about labour leaders involved in protests and picketing, but couldn’t acknowledge that I led those demonstrations. This is someone who once wrote an article titled ‘Oshiomhole the People’s President’ when I was NLC president,” Oshiomhole stated.

He went on to say that if Abati wanted to continue criticising him, he should do so directly.

“Instead of giving me credit, he claimed that once labour leaders leave the NLC, they go on to become governors,” Oshiomhole added.

He said, “If you’re bitter because you failed to become deputy governor in Ogun State, is that why you’re so paranoid and constantly attacking me?

“If you want to insult me, don’t hide behind the TV, come out to the streets and let’s settle it face to face.”

Sowore to sue Nigeria police over recent detention, alleged inhuman treatment

Published

on

Former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has resolved to sue the Nigeria Police Force over what his legal team termed “inhumane treatment” during his recent detention.

In a Saturday statement, his lawyer, Tope Temokun, alleged that police officers fractured Sowore’s arm during a violent attempt to forcibly transfer him from one cell to another around 6 a.m. on Friday, August 8, 2025.

The team rejected the police’s official account, which claimed Sowore arrived at their facility with a bandage, calling it “false, self-indicting, and illogical.”

Temokun urged the police to publish the inventory of Sowore’s possessions seized during his arrest as evidence to support their claims.

According to the statement, Sowore was denied access to his own medical team and instead offered treatment by an unqualified first-aider, without X-rays or proper diagnosis.

His refusal to be examined by police medical personnel, the lawyers said, was to prevent “manipulation of evidence” by those accused of causing the injury.

The legal team also criticised the police for ignoring other allegations, including the alleged theft of Sowore’s Ray-Ban AI glasses by an officer, while quickly issuing public denials over the assault claims.

Temokun argued that Sowore’s refusal to write a statement, cited by police as justification for his detention, is within his constitutional rights.

The team cited Section 35(2) of the Nigerian Constitution and Section 60(1) of the Police Act 2020.

“The fact remains unshaken: Omoyele Sowore’s arm was broken in police custody, under their control. We will pursue all appropriate legal remedies, including petitions to the Nigeria Police Council and the Police Service Commission,” Temokun said.

Sowore was released on Friday evening after two days in custody.

However, his legal team says a “full account” will be demanded from all officers involved.

Kano state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the immediate dismissal of two Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) following damning findings from investigative committees probing separate cases of misconduct.

This was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim.

The statement said: “In a decisive move, the Governor approved the dismissal of Abubakar Umar Sharada, Senior Special Assistant on Political Mobilization, after a Special Investigative Committee indicted him as the mastermind of the bail of a dangerous drug baron, Sulaiman Aminu Danwawu, which confirmed Abubakar Sharada’s culpability in the controversial bail process through the personal testimony he deposited before the committee.”

According to a dismissal letter issued on Friday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Sharada was directed to hand over all government property in his possession to the Permanent Secretary, Research, Evaluation and Political Affairs (REPA), Office of the SSG, on or before the close of work on Monday, 11th August 2025.

He was also cautioned against parading himself henceforth as a public officer under the present administration.

Similarly, the Governor relieved Tasiu Adamu Al’amin Roba, Senior Special Assistant, Cabinet Office, of his appointment after his arrest for rebagging palliative grains at a warehouse in Sharada in 2024.

Roba has since been arraigned in court and is facing charges of theft and criminal conspiracy for allegedly diverting public assets.

“Tasiu Adamu Al’amin Roba is also directed to hand over all government properties in his possession, including his ID card, on or before Monday, 11th August 2025,” the statement added.

“He is also cautioned against parading himself as a public official under the current administration.”

In a related development, the state government exonerated Hon. Musa Ado Tsamiya, Special Adviser on Drainages, who was cleared of all allegations by an investigative committee, affirming his innocence.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to discipline, transparency, and zero tolerance for corruption, warning all public officials to uphold the highest standards of integrity both in their official duties and private lives.
