Fenerbahce: Turkish Club Opens Talks With Mourinho For Head Coach Role

Jose Mourinho

Fenerbahce has initiated discussions with Jose Mourinho about taking over as head coach, the Turkish Super Lig club announced on Saturday.

The Portuguese manager is eyeing a return to coaching after being dismissed by AS Roma earlier this year.

Mourinho, renowned for his successful stints with top European clubs, is poised to lead a team that finished second in the Super Lig, just three points behind champions Galatasaray.

Should the deal go through, Mourinho will succeed Turkish coach Ismail Kartal, whose tenure saw only one league defeat but six draws that ultimately hindered their title ambitions.

With an illustrious career that includes triumphs at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United, Mourinho will aim to guide Fenerbahce to their first league title since the 2013-14 season.

The 61-year-old also led Roma to their first European trophy by winning the Europa Conference League in 2022 and reached the Europa League final the following year, where they were defeated by Sevilla on penalties.

Despite these achievements, Mourinho was sacked in January with Roma languishing in ninth place in Serie A, and he was succeeded by Daniele De Rossi.

Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, is not facing the sack despite their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

According to Sky Sports, the Premier League giants continue to regard Amorim as part of their longer-term project.

United’s commitment to the 40-year-old will not be affected by the loss, despite the club losing out on automatic Champions League spot.

Speaking after the game in Bilbao, Amorim had said he would leave United “the next day” for “no compensation” if the club’s board and fans no longer wanted him.

Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford in November with United sitting 13th in the table.

Since then, the Red Devils have fallen three places to sit above the relegated teams.

They have also been knocked out of the three cup competitions in the process.

EPL: I’ll quit, I won’t stay – Guardiola threatens Man City over squad

Guardiola

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has threatened to quit the club if they refuse to grant his request concerning the size of the squad.

The Cityzens boss said he does not want a large squad which would mean that some players will not have the opportunity to play.

The Catalan said his conscience would not allow him to bring players and end up benching them, adding that he would rather quit.

Manchester City have had a rough season. The Cityzens’ defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final last weekend meant that Pep Guardiola’s side will end the season without a major trophy.

They are also battling to finish in a Champions League place this season and it will all be decided on Sunday when the Premier League season draws the curtain.

However, Guardiola’s side kept their hopes of finishing third place alive on Tuesday by beating Bournemouth 3-1.

Speaking after the game, the former Barça manager told the press, “I told the club I don’t want a big squad. I don’t want to put five, six players in the tribune, I don’t want that. I will quit.

“If they don’t make a short squad, I will not stay.

“It’s impossible for my soul to put players in the tribune and cannot play.”

As the Premier League table stands, City along with Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are all battling for three spots.

City’s win against Bournemouth takes them on 68 points, two more than both Newcastle, Chelsea and Villa. Forest are one point further back.

A win at Fulham will guarantee City third position, while their decent goal difference means a draw may even be enough.
