Flight disruption imminent over NiMet workers’ strike

Published

on

Flight operations in Nigerian airports are likely to be disrupted as workers of the Nigeria Meteorology Agency, NiMet, embark on an indefinite nationwide strike on Wednesday.

This comes as workers unions, including the Union of Air Transport Employees, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical, and Recreational Services Employees, accused NiMet management of failing to honour agreements aimed at resolving prolonged remuneration issues.

The workers vehemently slammed NiMet management’s failure to implement a partial agreement reached on January 28, 2025.

“You are equally aware that the agreement between the management and our unions since 28th January 2025 towards partial amelioration of the above-stated condition has been honoured largely only in the breach.

“As a requirement, all flight operations need to get NiMet clearance for favourable weather before taking off from the airports.

“As you are all aware, our unions have strived strenuously over the past few years to alleviate the exceedingly unjust remunerations conundrum that has visited extreme poverty and consequent untold hardship on NiMet workers. These efforts have been largely without substantial results,” the letter added.

Meanwhile, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Michael Achimugu, and Tunde Moshood, the spokesperson of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, have yet to react to the development as of the time of filing this report.

However, speaking on the development, Managing Director of Aero Contractors, Ado Sanusi, emphasised that it was the standard operational procedure for airlines to get weather reports for aircraft to either land or take off. He, however, could not confirm if there would be flight operations on Wednesday or not.

“It is a standard operational procedure that if there is no weather report, there is no way an aircraft can either land at an airport or take off, but I cannot confirm if there will be flight operations tomorrow or not; I can not answer that question”, he stated.

Air transport passengers at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Murtala Muhammed Airport are already jittery about what their fate will be in the coming days.

“My flight is billed for tomorrow (Wednesday); the government intervene to avert a likely disruption,” Ireti Idowu stated.

Another passenger, Isaiah Manuel, billed for a trip from Abuja to Lagos State, also expressed fears of a possible disruption to the flight.

Police recover 20 pump-action guns, 14 AK-47s in Imo

The Imo State Police Command has announced that it has busted several criminal hideouts, leading to the arrest of 2,785 suspects involved in various criminal offences, ranging from armed robbery and kidnapping to child trafficking.

The command also stated that it recovered 20 pump-action guns, 14 AK-47 rifles, two general purpose machine guns, and four fabricated rocket launchers, among other weapons.

A press statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, revealed that the successful operations were the result of over six months of intensive activities carried out by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, in collaboration with other divisions and formations.

According to the statement, the operations also led to the rescue of 58 kidnapped victims and 42 stolen children, many of whom have since been reunited with their families.

The statement further disclosed that investigations into the various cases resulted in the recovery of a large cache of arms, ammunition, and explosives. These included two general purpose machine guns, 14 AK-47 rifles, 20 pump-action guns, four fabricated rocket launchers, seven gas-cylinder explosives, locally made hand grenades, assorted rounds of live ammunition, cartridges, and criminal charms, among other items.

Among the key suspects arrested were Amechi Onyebuchi, 38, Ozioma Ihedoro, 39, Cyprian Ikpegbunam, 50, and Uchenna Opara, 30. The suspects were said to be members of a notorious criminal gang responsible for multiple attacks on security formations and public infrastructure in Njaba LGA.

The command’s spokesperson noted that the arrests were made by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, acting on credible intelligence in conjunction with other tactical teams.

Okoye stated that during interrogation, the suspects confessed to the kidnap and murder of one Emmanuel Oguzie, allegedly on the orders of a gang leader known as Asari, who, according to the statement, remains on the command’s wanted list.

In a separate but related case, two suspected kidnappers, Uche Nwachukwu, 24, and Chinonso Ozirim, 32, were arrested for abducting one Mr Anayo Iwuoha from his compound at Akabo, Ikeduru LGA, on June 20, 2025.

According to Okoye, the syndicate held the victim at Chinonso Ozirim’s residence and collected a ransom of N2.2 million before a joint operation by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and local vigilantes led to the rescue of the victim and the arrest of the suspects.

He added that a manhunt is ongoing for the arrest of other fleeing accomplices.

“Recently apprehended is also, Wisdom Chinazaekpere Ogbonna ,36, of Orlu LGA, a notorious member of the Vikings Confraternity. Ogbonna had been on the run for two years following the brutal murder of a young man known as “Pikin,” who was mistakenly identified as a rival cultist and butchered with knives by Ogbonna and three other gang members.

“He was recently apprehended by operatives of Orlu Division for burglary and stealing, but upon further profiling and transfer to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, he was identified as one of the cultists involved in the heinous murder. All the suspects will be arraigned in court upon completion of investigation, ” according Okoye.

BLOOD BETRAYAL! Two Sisters, a Civil Defence Officer and an Immigration Officer, Busted for Kidnapping Their Own Brother for ₦30M Ransom!

In a jaw-dropping twist that has left Nigerians in shock, two sisters, Juliet Chukwu (a Civil Defence officer) and Ngozi Nancy Chukwu (an Immigration officer) — have been arrested by the Anti-Cult Squad of Enugu State Police Command for allegedly masterminding the kidnap of their own elder brother, Mr. Friday Chukwu, and a company official, Engr. Igwe Denis Chibueze.

It all started in May when Mr. Friday Chukwu was abducted along the Enugu-PH Express Road. Reports allege that the family paid a ransom of ₦30 million for his release, not knowing his own sisters were behind it.

But the story didn’t end there…

On July 14th, Engr. Igwe Denis Chibueze, CLO of China Oriental Quarry Company, was also kidnapped in a similar fashion, with a ₦10 million ransom demand. A swift operation by security personnel traced the suspects to a hotel where they were caught red-handed splitting ransom money.

Further investigations revealed the sisters had been linked to multiple criminal cases in Ishiagu, Ebonyi State — including staged kidnappings, pipeline vandalism, looting of rail lines, and alleged collaboration with Fulani herders to terrorize local communities.

From uniform to underworld — who can you really trust these days?

Plateau attacks: ‘Soldiers supporting Fulani militias to attack us’ – Community leader alleges

Published

on

A community leader in Jebbu Binde village of Ta-Hoss District in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, where gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias attacked on Monday killing over 30 people, has accused the military of supporting the bandits.

The community leader, Rev Davou Musa, who is the Chairman of the Regional Church Council (RCC) of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Riyom, made the allegation while addressing Governor Caleb Mutfwang during his visit to the community for an on-the-spot assessment of the damage and to condole with the victims.

While addressing the Governor, Rev Musa revealed that the armed assailants would not have found it so easy to invade the community in large numbers and operate for hours despite military operatives stationed only 200 meters away, if they did not have the backing of the soldiers.

According to the RCC Chairman, despite repeated and frantic calls for help, the military refused to come to their aid and refused to intervene to prevent the carnage, with no arrests made in the aftermath.

He blamed the military for failing in its duty to protect the people and accused the personnel of complicity by shielding the attackers and called on the federal government to withdraw the special military task force deployed in the community since they cannot protect the people.

“I have told the GOC in clear terms and I’m repeating it to your hearing that his (GOC) men are busy supporting the Fulani, even in grazing and farmland destruction,” Musa said.

“The assailants found it easy to invade the community and operated for hours and the soldiers who were stationed only 200 meters away refused to come to our aid despite frantic calls made to them.

“The heinous attack claimed innocent lives, left many others injured, and resulted in the destruction of homes, including a church. Food items belonging to villagers were also looted by the attackers, compounding the tragedy,” he alleged.

Musa also alleged that the soldiers were compromised and more concerned with protecting Fulani cattle than human lives.

“Is it not clear that the military is protecting and shielding the attackers? When Fulani herders are victims of cattle theft, the security forces respond swiftly, deploying multiple Hilux vehicles loaded with armed personnel to investigate and apprehend suspects.

“Conversely, attacks on villages resulting in loss of human life often receive a slower and less robust response. This disparity in security deployment has continued to raise concerns about prioritization and protection of human lives.

‘It is now glaring that the military is compromised and are more concerned with protecting our attackers instead of our people and our communities,” Rev Musa claimed.
