Judges, magistrates tools in hands of politicians – NBA President, Osigwe

Published

on

President of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Afam Osigwe, SAN, has lamented that judges and magistrates appear to be tools in the hands of politicians and ‘big men’.

Osigwe said this on Wednesday during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ monitored by Ekwutosblog.

He said that free speech is being concealed in Nigeria under the guise of cyber crime and defamation.

“Free speech is being muzzled in Nigeria under the guise of charging people to court and investigating them for cyber crime and criminal defamation.

“Even when the matters are ordinarily bailable, judges and magistrates appear to be tools in the hands of politicians and ‘big men’ and refuse bail even where there is no basis for not granting bail.

“This is a violation of the right to freedom of expression and an abuse of the democratic space.

“Because these public office holders should be held to a higher standard of accountability and if they deprive people of the ability to criticize and hold them to account, then democracy dies.

“If our judges become willing tools in giving them that which they desire, which is to put those people out of circulation, then there’s something wrong and the judiciary becomes a willing tool in the hands of the oppressors and thereby becomes an oppressor itself,” he said.

Budgeting N127m for presidential villa car unacceptable – Sen Shehu

Chairman, Senate Committee on Special Duties, Kaka Shehu, has strongly rejected the budget of N127m for SUV cars for the Presidential Villa.

Speaking during budget defense on Wednesday in Abuja, Senator Shehu said such an amount of money is totally unacceptable.

He said, “The renewed hope agenda of President Tinubu is alive. We are happy that even the villa is being treated equally with other ministries. That is leadership by example.

“Convey our deep appreciation to Mr President. We are going to do justice to the budget before us.

“However, I will join my colleague in rejecting N127 million for SUV in the villa, it cannot buy even a bulletproof ‘tokunbo’. We must project the image of Nigeria positively in the committee of nations.

“That is totally unacceptable. So we will take note of that and do the needful. We don’t want a situation where a visiting president will use ‘tokunbo’ at the airport. No.

“So, the budget office must sit up. When you now send your proposal, you have to do justice to your request not by reducing it to an amount that would end up buying a ‘tokunbo’.”
