on

The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a landmark bill, creating three additional second-class emirates in the state.

The Kano State Emirates Council Establishment Bill 2024, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Muhammad Bello Bututu, aims to restructure the emirate system, designating Kano as a first-class emirate and establishing Rano, Gaya, and Karaye as second-class emirates.

The bill, which received its third reading on Tuesday, outlines the jurisdiction and responsibilities of the new emirates, with the second-class emirs reporting to the Emir of Kano.

The governor’s approval will be required for all appointments and activities of both first-class and second-class emirs.

Lawmakers, including Ibrahim Muhammadu of the NNPP, have expressed support for the bill, acknowledging the historical significance of the Kano emirate.

The bill’s passage marks a significant development in Kano’s governance structure, pending the governor’s assent to become law.

Give us money, ignore critics – Umahi begs Tinubu

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release more funds for infrastructural projects.

Umahi said Tinubu should discountenance critics and release more funds for the execution of projects.

He made the appeal during the official commissioning of the Deep Sea Port Access Road in Lagos on Thursday.

The Minister said the project has been endorsed by international financiers and they described it as undervalued.

According to Umahi: “I want to assure you, sir, that the international financiers have given you kudos because they say the project is even undervalued.

“Sir, don’t listen to people. Give us more money; we will deliver all these projects, sir. We will deliver.”

Umahi also highlighted the complexities in the construction of the Deep Sea Port Access Road in Lagos.

He faulted those demanding to know the cost of the project because they feel it’s inflated and corruption is involved.

“When people gather counsel without knowledge… Your Excellency, I am a Fellow of the Society of Engineers, and I understand the figures; I understand this work.

“I want to thank you for commissioning the first 30km, and I reassure you that this first section will be completed by December. We shall toll it, and Section 2 will also be close to completion. I commend the contractor very highly,” he added.

ADC holds coalition meeting in Abia

Published

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, and its coalition partners convened a landmark political summit in Umuahia, Abia State, on Friday, describing it as a unified front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Don Norman Obinna, chairman of ADC in Abia State, announced during the meeting that the party has officially been adopted as the platform for the coalition’s political resurgence.

According to him, this move is not about political realignment alone but a response to years of governance failure, economic mismanagement, and citizen disenfranchisement under the present APC administration.

“ADC is adopted as a coalition party to right the wrongs orchestrated by the APC. The unemployment rate is alarming, the naira is in a free fall, and the civil servants’ minimum wage is a national disgrace,” Don Norman declared.

According to him, the coalition’s mission will bring succour to the people, chase hunger out of Nigeria, and restore the country to a trajectory of prosperity.”

He called for the liberation of Abia and Nigeria at large, through visionary leadership founded on integrity, equity, and accountability.

“Since 1999, our ideology in Abia has been to bring in men of integrity who can rebuild Nigeria with justice and fairness,” he added. “Good governance must be rooted in probity and transparency.”

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Uzoma Emmanuel Afamefuna, political scholar and reform advocate, emphasised the power of stakeholder engagement and civic participation in shaping Nigeria’s future.

Professor Afamefuna condemned the marginalisation of the South East and called for rotational leadership, equitable representation, and issue-based campaigns.

“We must not sell our votes for rice, wrappers, or fake promises. Only through citizen-led accountability can Nigeria chart a new course,” he said.

Adding his voice, Rev. Blessed Amalambu, ADC’s 2023 House of Assembly candidate in Abia, urged the coalition brokers to critically screen aspirants and guard against the infiltration of corrupt political elements.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anambra Chapter, has pleaded with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, to return to the party.

Obi defected to LP when he felt he could not achieve his presidential ambition within the PDP fold.

The PDP made the call after the enlarged meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) to review the state of the party and chart a way forward in Awka on Thursday.

The communique, which was signed by Chidi Chidebe, Chairman of PDP in Anambra, said alliances with ideologically incompatible political formations in the guise of coalitions would likely not yield the desired success.

“The committee extends an open invitation to all aggrieved and former members of the PDP in Anambra, particularly our revered former governor, Mr Peter Obi, to return home and reunite with the now rejuvenated and restructured PDP”

“We will gladly welcome our brothers and sisters back to join us in the collective quest for a better Nigeria,”

He told Anambra electorate to support Mr Jude Ezenwafor and his running mate, Mr Francis Okeke, in the coming election while urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a fair, transparent, and impartial electoral process.
