Olubadan Breaks Silence On Snubbing Alaafin Of Oyo’s Greeting

Published

on

The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Arusa 1, has clarified that he didn’t intentionally snub the greeting from the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, during a recent public function in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The Olubadan, who addressed journalists in Ibadan over the matter, said the issue has been blown out of proportion, particularly on social media.

The monarch insisted that ignoring Oba Owoade’s outstretched hand at the event was not intentional or out of disrespect.

According to him, he arrived late at the event and was in a hurry to get to his seat in order not to distract people from the ongoing program.

“There was no intention whatsoever. What happened was not deliberate. It has been misinterpreted, especially on social media.

“When I go late to a place, I try to bring good news. At the mosque, when prayers are ongoing, you wait until they form a line and then you join appropriately. I was simply trying to take my seat before anyone would say I could not move again,” the monarch explained.

The Olubadan stated that he had no intention to avoid or ignore anyone, explaining that his seat was located between designated zones, which required him to pass through some sections of the hall. By the time he returned, he discovered that other dignitaries had already moved, prompting him to retrace his steps.

“My seat was sandwiched between Soun and Alaafin. I had to pass through some people to get there. I didn’t make any decision to avoid or ignore anyone. Why should I?” he asked.

Oba Ladoja added that some people are deliberately mischievous on social media, as the viral video did not capture what transpired fully at the event.

“If you watch the full video, you will see me greeting people, including the governor. But social media has a way of taking things out of context,” he added.

The Olubadan added that communication had been made between the two palaces over the event, dismissing claims of tension or offence.

“I don’t think anyone was being offensive, and I don’t see the issue as an insult to anybody,” he said.

He also used the opportunity to call for peace and unity in Yorubaland, particularly among younger generations.

“My goal is to unite the present generation and those coming after us. We must raise standards, especially in education, and focus on what truly brings progress to our society,” the traditional ruler submitted.

Recall that a video circulating on social media captured the moment the Olubadan of Ibadanland ignored the handshake of the Alaafin of Oyo.

The incident occurred at the 2026 interfaith gathering, held at the Grand Space, near the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Portable Arraigned In Court

Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was on Monday arraigned before the Federal High Court sitting in Ota, Ogun State, over multiple criminal allegations including assault, theft, causing bodily harm and resisting arrest.

The singer is facing a nine-count charge, according to the Ogun State Police Command. Confirming the development, the state police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the charges stem from a series of incidents involving the artiste, notably an alleged assault on his estranged partner, Ashabi Simple, and other individuals.

Portable’s court appearance followed the circulation of a viral video on Sunday showing him in police custody. The video was reportedly connected to a complaint lodged by Ashabi Simple, who accused the singer of physically assaulting her.

Prosecutors told the court that the alleged incident occurred on New Year’s Day at Portable’s bar located in the Iyana Ilogbo area of Ogun State, where he was said to have attacked Ashabi, several police officers, and other individuals.

In addition to the assault allegations, Portable was accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300 valued at ₦12 million. The vehicle reportedly belongs to one Ileyemi Damilola and was allegedly obtained from Wally Dex Auto under questionable circumstances.

Other alleged victims listed in the charge include Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi and Ebuka Odah.

During the proceedings, siblings of Ashabi Simple testified before the court as witnesses to the alleged assault, although the complainant herself was absent. The police also accused Portable of obstructing and assaulting a female police officer, Inspector Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was performing her official duties.

After listening to the testimonies, the presiding judge declined to grant the singer bail, citing the absence of the police officer who was allegedly assaulted. The court ruled that the officer must appear before any decision on bail could be made.

Consequently, Portable was remanded in custody, while the court adjourned the matter to January 19 for a fresh bail hearing.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a separate viral video showing the singer allegedly being assaulted while in police custody. Authorities say the probe is ongoing as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Abiodun mourns passing of Mama Lucia Onabanjo

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed deep condolences to the family of former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, over the passing of their matriarch, Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, who died at the age of 101.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta on Tuesday, Governor Abiodun described the demise of Mama Onabanjo as the end of a glorious era, noting that she lived a highly exemplary, fulfilled, and distinguished life devoted to God, family, and humanity.

The Governor said that although the loss of a mother is always painful, regardless of age, Mama Lucia’s transition at 101 is also worthy of celebration, given her impactful life and enduring legacy.

According to him, Mama Onabanjo stood firmly by her husband, the late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, through his historic struggles for democracy, human rights, and social justice in Nigeria.

He said:

“After a glorious epoch in which she joined her husband, our Papa, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, in the fight for democracy, the delivery of its dividends on a massive scale, and the advancement of human rights and social justice, Mama has now been reunited with Papa in glory.

“Mama was a treasure and a source of joy to all who knew her. She consistently supported us with her prayers and goodwill, spreading joy, comfort, and hope to everyone around her.

“I commiserate with the Onabanjo family, even as I celebrate them for the great gift that Mama was to all of us.

“She stood by her husband through thick and thin and raised children and grandchildren who are today highly distinguished in diverse fields of human endeavour, breaking records and contributing meaningfully to society.

“We bless the Lord for her long and fulfilled life, her legacy of love, strength, deep faith, and commitment to development.

“We will miss her warmth, her wise counsel, her passion for progress, and her prayers. May the Good Lord grant her eternal rest in His bosom.”

Governor Abiodun prayed that God would grant the Onabanjo family, friends, and associates the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
