PDP Mocks APC Over Witless Statement on Former Rivers State Lawmakers …Insists Defectors Have Constitutionally Lost Their Seats

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) OfficialPDPNig lampoons the All Progressives Congress (APC) OfficialAPCNg over its witless press statement wherein it laboured without success to subvert the Constitution on the vacation of seats by former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who lost their membership of that Legislative House upon defection from the PDP.
The statement further exposes the hallucinating and manipulative plots by the APC to force itself into goverment in Rivers State against the WILL of the people; a futile venture which will remain a mirage for the APC.
It is indeed pathetic for the APC to think that the facts and true import of Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to the effect that the former lawmakers have since lost their seats can be muddled and lost in litigations and lengthy press statements.
Interestingly, in the failed bid to subvert the Constitution to give the former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly a lifeline, the APC ended up admitting the clarity of the proviso of Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) in voiding their seats upon their defection.
For the avoidance of doubt, Section 109 (1)(g) of the Constitution is clear in providing that “a member of a House of Assembly shall vacate his seat in the House if – being a person whose election to the House of Assembly was sponsored by a political party, he becomes a member of another political party before expiration of the period for which that House was elected:
“Provided that his membership of the latter political party is not as a result of a division in the political party of which he was previously a member or of a merger of two or more political parties or factions by one of which he was previously sponsored.”
The former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, for reasons best known to them, wittingly vacated and summarily lost their seats as nothing in the proviso protects or allows them to retain their membership of the Rivers State House of Assembly after decamping from the political party upon which they were elected.
These former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have only themselves to blame for Constitutionally vacating their seats; a course which cannot be reversed or remedied. They should admit their miscalculation and bear the inescapable consequences.
This is especially so as the Supreme Court, in the case of Abegunde vs Ondo State House of Assembly and Others, has since clarified and affirmed the import of the proviso in Section 109(1)(g) in validating the automatic vacation of a seat by a member of a Legislative House who defected from the Party upon which he was elected into that House.
For the umpteenth time the PDP cautions the APC to steer clear of Rivers State; it should perish the thoughts of forcefully taking over the State and stop exasperating the public space by seeking to reverse the irreversible.
The APC should come to terms that with the vacation of seats by the former lawmakers, the quorum of the Rivers State House of Assembly will be determined by the number of the remaining lawmakers as provided by law; until a bye-election is conducted to fill the vacancies now existing in the Rivers State House of Assembly as a result of the defection by the former members.

Amaechi Slams Wike, Calls Him ‘A Child’: ‘I Refused To Make Him Finance Commissioner’

Appearing on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday evening, Amaechi revisited the long-standing rift between him and his former political ally turned rival, Nyesom Wike.
Former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, has taken a swipe at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, stating that Wike did not make him governor and was instead a subordinate who he appointed as Chief of Staff to monitor closely.
Appearing on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday evening, Amaechi revisited the long-standing rift between him and his former political ally turned rival, Nyesom Wike.
In a fiery rebuttal, Amaechi stated that it was God, former Rivers State Governor Dr. Peter Odili, the Nigerian judiciary, and the people of Rivers State that made him governor—not Wike.
“The first thing I want to make clear is this: nobody made me Governor. It was God, Dr. Peter Odili, and the Nigerian judiciary—nobody else,” Amaechi declared.
His comments come in response to Wike’s recent jab, following Amaechi’s remark during his 60th birthday that “we’re all hungry.” Wike dismissed that statement, alleging that Amaechi was not hungry for food but for political relevance.
Amaechi, in turn, dismissed Wike’s claim that he (Wike) played a pivotal role in making him governor.
“As a journalist, nobody has ever asked that man who claims he made me governor: ‘How exactly did you make him governor?’ Right? Nobody has ever asked that question,” Amaechi stated.
He recalled the legal battle that led to his ascension as governor, noting that Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), now the Attorney General of the Federation, was his lead counsel at the time. According to Amaechi, the decisive court judgment that declared him governor had nothing to do with Wike’s influence.
“I went to court. If anything, Lateef Fagbemi, now Anthony General of the Federation was my lawyer. You can ask him,” he said.
Amaechi also recounted how Wike, then seeking a powerful portfolio, had asked to be appointed Commissioner for Finance in Rivers State after his court victory. Instead, Amaechi said he insisted on making him Chief of Staff to enable closer supervision.
“Mohammed Adoke flew from Abuja to Port Harcourt to make that case. But I said no. I wanted Wike as Chief of Staff so I could supervise him directly. I never offered him the position of Commissioner for Finance,” Amaechi revealed.
In a thinly veiled jab, Amaechi described Wike as someone who made himself everything.
“Let’s be honest: he made himself Chief of Staff, made himself Governor, made himself minister…—so let it end there. Don’t go any further,” he quipped, adding, “I don’t want to join issues with children.”
Amaechi stressed that he once had authority over Wike and still regards him as a former subordinate, despite their later positions.
“I’ve said it several times: he was my subordinate. I was once his boss, whether he likes it or not. I hired him. I could have said no. Just because we’ve both held certain positions doesn’t mean we’re equals,” he emphasised.
Highlighting his broader leadership record, Amaechi noted that beyond being a governor and minister like Wike, he also held the role of Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly—an additional feather in his political cap.
“Yes, I was a governor. He became a governor. I was a minister. He became a minister. But I was also a Speaker,” he added.

On Tuesday, just days after leaving his post in the Trump administration, Musk launched yet another broadside against the legislation, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill.
United States Billionaire, Elon Musk, has renewed his criticisms of US President Donald Trump’s signature budget bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination” in a series of social media posts.
On Tuesday, just days after leaving his post in the Trump administration, Musk launched yet another broadside against the legislation, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill.
The bill would extend tax cuts established in 2017, during Trump’s first term, and funnel more funds to his administration’s priorities, including $46.5 billion for the construction of barriers at the US border with Mexico.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore.”
“This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination.”
“Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it,” he shared on his official X handle.
“It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt,” Musk said in one post. In another, he wrote, “Congress is making America bankrupt.”
Musk, who just resigned from the Trump administration, remains an ally of the United States government.
However, he has not hidden his interest in cutting the costs of governance — though his moves have been termed controversial, leading to protests across the country.
Donald Trump has yet to respond to Musk’s condemnation, and it remains unclear whether he will attack his ally or play down the comments.
