Southern Kaduna Leaders Demand Probe Of Ex-Governor El-Rufai Over Alleged Crimes, Human Rights Violations

Citing official correspondences and committee terms of reference, the SKLC stated that El-Rufai’s administration in 2017 set up a 13-member committee under the guise of reforming the chieftaincy system, which effectively forced changes to traditional titles and boundaries.

The Southern Kaduna Leadership Council (SKLC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to initiate a judicial probe into former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over what it describes as “criminal actions, systemic abuse of office, and orchestrated marginalisation” against the people of Southern Kaduna during his tenure.

At a world press conference eld Wednesday in Kaduna, the Council categorically rejected what it termed “false and misleading claims” by Mr. Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai’s former media adviser, accusing him of spreading untruths in defence of the former governor’s controversial policies.

The statement, titled “Dispelling Lies and Hate Against a People: El-Rufai’s Reign of Terror Against Southern Kaduna,” signed by Timothy B. Gandu, SKLC Secretary, rebuffed claims that several ethnic groups in Southern Kaduna had requested the balkanisation and renaming of their chiefdoms, describing the process as unilateral, coercive, and deceitful.

Citing official correspondences and committee terms of reference, the SKLC stated that El-Rufai’s administration in 2017 set up a 13-member committee under the guise of reforming the chieftaincy system, which effectively forced changes to traditional titles and boundaries.

According to the SKLC, out of the 25 indigenous chiefdoms whose names were changed, 17 wrote letters of opposition, while seven others explicitly stated they never requested any changes. “El-Rufai ignored their objections and implemented his divisive policies regardless,” the Council stated.

The leaders further accused the former governor of deliberately fostering religious and ethnic divisions, citing a now-viral video in which El-Rufai allegedly admitted to deceiving Southern Kaduna members of his political party while secretly promoting a Muslim–Muslim governance agenda.

Most damningly, the Council accused El-Rufai of aiding and abetting what they described as “genocide” in Southern Kaduna, claiming he used state funds to make payments to individuals as incentives not to carry out killings—an action they say must be investigated by security agencies.

The SKLC urged the current Kaduna State Government, under Governor Uba Sani, to repeal the 2021 Traditional Institution Law enacted under El-Rufai and restore the pre-2015 traditional structures.

The SKLC noted that in Lere Local Government, with nine ethnic groups, only one group requested a name change. The same was true for Kauru and Kagarko LGAs. “We have it on good authority that El-Rufai orchestrated these requests behind the scenes,” the statement read.

“Out of 25 affected chiefdoms, 17 wrote explicitly rejecting the name changes. Another seven made clear they never made such requests. Yet El-Rufai implemented these changes regardless. This shows his clear disregard for due process and the will of the people.”

The Council also listed a number of actions it believes amounted to systematic marginalisation, repression, and human rights violations. These include: Religious and ethnic manipulation: El-Rufai’s admission in a viral video of pitching Christians against Muslims, and ethnic group against ethnic group.

“Unilateral creation of emirates: In multi-religious and multi-ethnic areas, under the guise of chieftaincy reform; Suspicious murders and depositions of traditional rulers; Arbitrary redistricting: Reduction of districts from 390 to 77, weakening traditional institutions’ role in community security; 2021 Traditional Institution Law: Used to demote and re-grade chiefs, instilling fear among traditional rulers; Profiling and marginalization of Southern Kaduna youth: Including selective closure of tertiary institutions in the region.

“Mass retrenchment of Southern Kaduna civil servants and exclusion from governance; Inflammatory and divisive rhetoric: Including repeated insults and denigration of Southern Kaduna elders and leaders; Punitive curfews: That economically crippled the region; Failure to provide IDP camps: Despite persistent banditry and displacement of residents.

“Illegal boundary alterations: Such as the movement of Ladduga from Ikulu Chiefdom to Adara Chiefdom and expansion of the Kachia Grazing Reserve without consent; Arbitrary detention of community leaders: Including Adara and SOKAPU leaders.”

Their demands include: A judicial probe into El-Rufai’s tenure; Enforcement of a Federal High Court ruling that found El-Rufai guilty of gross abuse of office; A lifetime ban from holding public office.

Full investigation by security agencies into payments allegedly made to stop killings; Repeal of the 2021 Traditional Institution Law and restoration of the 2015 traditional structure; A statewide review of exclusionary laws and policies.

The SKLC commended the administration of Governor Uba Sani for its inclusive approach and support for developmental initiatives in Southern Kaduna, such as the establishment of the Federal University of Applied Science in Kachia and the Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan.

“We believe that His Excellency will achieve much more in transforming Kaduna into an enviable haven for all if he continues to run an inclusive government,” the statement added.

NFSS operatives would bear arms to protect Benue, other states – Osatimehin tells Gov Alia

Published

The Commander General of the Nigerian Forest Security Service, NFSS, Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, has expressed his agreement with Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia on his assertion that local vigilantes and forest guards set up by the state government lack the capacity to confront bandits and other violent criminals terrorsing local communities.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, the Governor said the State Protection Guards were only permitted to carry Dane guns, while militias brazenly wield AK-47 and AK-49 rifles, making enforcement dangerous and largely ineffective.

The Governor was reacting to the poser raised by a group, Benue Advocacy Network, over the rising insecurity despite the existence of an anti-open grazing law.

Responding to questions by newsmen on the issue on Monday in Abuja, Osatimehin, who spoke through the Deputy Commander General, Intelligence, Ambassador John Metchie, said the proposed law for the establishment of NFSS, allows its operatives to bear arms, saying the Service would have what it takes to comb forests, flush out criminals and protect local communities in Benue and other states across the country from attacks.

Metchie while expressing sympathy and solidarity with the government and people of Benue State for the recent killings that took place in some communities in the area, however commended the military and other security agencies for rising up to the occasion, with a view of ensuring that such ugly incidences do not re-occur.

He also commented President Bola Tinubu for personally visiting the affected state and giving directives to the security agencies to arrest perpetrators of the crimes.

“The Nigerian Forest Security Service, sympathies with the government and people of Benue, Plateau and other states recently affected by attacks by violent criminal elements, especially families of the victims.

“We agree with Governor Alia that local vigilantes and guards cannot protect communities, especially in cases where violent criminals who operate with high grade weapons are involved.

“It is for that reason that the NFSS is here as the missing link to bridge the gap. We recognize and commend the Nigerian military, the Police, the Department of State Security, Office of the National Security Advisor, the NSCDC and other relevant agencies for the untiring efforts to secure the nation and protect her people and properties.

“The NFSS believe that when the bill establishing the Service is assented to by His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu,GCFR, a lot more would be achieved through collaborative efforts and synergy, especially in the areas of intelligence gathering and sharing which are critical to security of any nation

“To that end, we use this opportunity to solicit the support of Governor Alia and all other stakeholders for the NFSS bill to be signed into law my Mr. President,” Metchie said.

According to Nansel, the CP, in a high-level engagement with hotel owners and managers from the 13 Local Government Areas of the state, held at the Police Command Headquarters in Lafia, stated the need for collaboration between law enforcement and the hospitality sector.

“You are our partners in security. As the eyes and ears of the community, we urge you to be alert, and report any suspicious gatherings or bookings immediately.

“If you see something, say something,” the CP stated.

The meeting, which sought to strengthen community policing and information-sharing networks, received commendations from hotel operators.

Fuel price cut: Dangote Refinery petrol distribution will reduce Nigeria’s inflation – Rewane

Published

The Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company, Bismarck Rewane, said that Dangote Refinery’s petrol distribution initiative, billed to kick off on August 15, 2025, would help in curbing Nigeria’s headline inflation, which stood at 22.97 percent as of May.

Rewane made this known in a statement on Monday, citing an FDC report published in the Lagos Business School (LBS) Executive Breakfast Presentation for July 2025.

According to Rewane, Dangote Refinery’s plan to spend over N1.7 trillion annually on logistics costs to distribute fuel is a game changer in the country’s oil and gas downstream sector.

He noted that Dangote Refinery’s move to use compressed natural gas trucks to distribute fuel and automotive gas oil nationwide to the doorsteps of end-users will lower prices and curb inflation.

“The initiative is set to revolutionise Nigeria’s oil downstream business by cutting logistics costs and by spending over N1.7 trillion annually,” it stated, emphasising that Dangote Refinery’s fuel distribution strategy, which involves deploying 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks nationwide, will lower pump prices, curb inflation, and support over 42 million MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises).

“With 4,000 CNG-powered trucks delivering refined products directly to the doorsteps of end-users, the move will lower pump prices, curb inflation, and support over 42 million MSMEs.”

Ekwutosblog reports that Dangote Refinery announced a plan to commence direct petrol and diesel distribution to end-users.

However, petroleum products marketers and retailers have kicked against the move, noting it would lead to massive job losses.

Ekwutosblog reports that fuel prices dropped in the last six days following the drop in global crude oil prices and the ex-depot price slash to N840 per litre from N880 by Dangote Refinery.
