Super Eagles Drop Eight Places In FIFA Rankings After Poor World Cup Qualifiers

Published

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have slipped eight places to 38th in the latest FIFA rankings, following a disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

This drop comes after a historic loss to the Benin Republic and a draw against South Africa, leaving their qualification hopes in jeopardy.

The latest rankings, released on Thursday, place Nigeria fifth in Africa, down two positions on the continental ladder.

Morocco now leads the African rankings, moving up to 12th globally, followed by Senegal (18th), Egypt (36th), and Cote d’Ivoire (37th).

Globally, the top five positions are held by Argentina, France, Belgium, Brazil, and England.

Despite their fall in the rankings, the Super Eagles remain ahead of their main qualifying rivals, South Africa, who are ranked 59th globally and 10th in Africa.

They also rank higher than Cameroon (49th) and Ghana (64th), as well as nations like Scotland, Chile, and Norway.

The Super Eagles will look to regain form in their next competitive matches during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers later this year.

EPL: Sign Osimhen instead of Gyokeres – Ferdinand advises Man United

Rio Ferdinand

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has advised his former club to sign Victor Osimhen instead of Viktor Gyokeres.

The Red Devils are in search of more firepower upfront after an underwhelming campaign.

The duo of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failed to deliver the goods, with United finishing in a disappointing 15th position on the table.

Ruben Amorim’s side also lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the UEFA Europa League.

Gyokeres, who had an outstanding campaign for Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

The forward scored 39 goals and registered eight assists to help Sporting Lisbon clinch the Portuguese League title.

Despite his impressive form in front of goal, Ferdinand believed Osimhen would be a better fit for his old club.

“I think Gyokeres, everyone’s talking about him. Again, I think if I’m looking at the market now and I had to pick him or Osimhen, I’d probably pick Osimhen because of that experience,” the former England international told the Mirror.
