A young man suspected to be under the influence of drugs allegedly set his family house on fire following a heated argument with relatives in Lagos.

In a video circulating on social media in the early hours of Wednesday, family members were seen struggling to escape from the burning building as flames spread through parts of the house.

Some occupants could be heard shouting and calling for help while attempting to make their way out of the building.

The person who recorded the video claimed that the suspect, believed to be between 21 and 25 years old, had earlier engaged in a fight with members of his family before the incident.

According to the narrator in the footage, the young man, who was described as a suspected drug addict, was seen wearing several chains around his neck before allegedly setting the house on fire.

The narrator also alleged that the suspect vandalised property within the compound, including smashing the windscreen of a Lexus Prado car parked inside the compound. Several household items were reportedly destroyed during the disturbance.

The suspect’s mother was seen outside the building in a state of panic while other family members gathered around the compound as the situation unfolded.

Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were reportedly called to the scene and were seen making efforts to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact location of the incident in Lagos could not be independently confirmed.

It was also unclear whether there were injuries or arrests connected to the incident, as authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate arrest of the owner of a multi-story hotel that collapsed in Jikwoyi, Abuja last Friday, April 4 and announced that the land would be seized for public use.

LIB had reported that the building crumbled while workers were on site, triggering an emergency response from relevant authorities.

Visiting the site today April 7, Wike said the building was constructed without approval from the FCT Department of Development Control and that all the stop-work notices sent to the builders were ignored by the developer.

Wike confirmed that while there were no fatalities, several people sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. He warned that the outcome could have been far worse.

Announcing the government’s plans for the land, Wike said the FCT Administration will take over the land for public use, noting that those responsible for the illegal construction will face prosecution in accordance with the law.

He added that the local community would be consulted to determine a suitable public-purpose project for the reclaimed site.
