Former Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Dr. Ikedi Ohakim, delivered a thought-provoking and inspiring address at the Okigwe Peace and Unity Summit, commending the organizers and the people of Okigwe Zone for their collective resolve to rebuild and reposition the region for lasting peace and progress.
Dr. Ohakim began by recounting how the Host Obowo LGA had remained a “lead light in the renewed history of Okigwe Zone.” He noted that the host local government had once again set the pace in fostering unity and dialogue among the people, and urged other LGAs to emulate this exemplary role.
Reflecting on the significance of the summit, Dr. Ohakim emphasized that the event marked a turning point in the political and social evolution of Okigwe. He encouraged all sons and daughters of the zone to return to their various communities and contribute meaningfully to grassroots development, particularly by participating in the ongoing Governor Hope Uzodimma Health Insurance Program, which guarantees accessible and affordable healthcare for all residents.
He further called on the people to prioritize massive voter registration and PVC enrollment, noting that political participation remains a crucial pathway for consolidating the region’s unity and advancing its collective interests. “Let us ensure that our people are fully involved in the democratic process,” he urged, stressing that true empowerment comes when citizens take ownership of their civic responsibilities.
In a passionate plea for peace and harmony, the elder statesman prayed for divine intervention to “remove the bad spirit of fighting one another and the forces of retrogression” that have in the past hindered Okigwe’s growth. He urged everyone present to sustain the new spirit of cooperation birthed at the summit.
Expressing deep gratitude to the conveners and participants, Dr. Ohakim described the gathering as “the beginning of a new story” for Okigwe Zone and Imo State at large. “Today we are back on a new dream,” he said, “driven by unity, purpose, and determination to harness our collective strength for the progress of our people.”
He called on stakeholders to protect the unity achieved through the summit and ensure that Okigwe remains a beacon of peace, strength, and progress within Imo State. Quoting literary icon Chinua Achebe, Dr. Ohakim reminded the audience that “nothing passes God, and nothing surpasses the power of peace and unity.”
In conclusion, he charged the people to build a prosperous Okigwe — one where their children can thrive, where peace reigns, and where collective efforts yield sustainable development for generations to come.
