NECO: NANS kicks against N50,000 certificate fee

Published

on

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is protesting the National Examination Council’s (NECO) new policy requiring students to pay N50,000 to reprint lost or damaged certificates. NANS considers this fee outrageous and an exploitation of Nigerian students, who are already struggling financially.

According to NANS, this policy will exacerbate financial exclusion, deny students access to their rightful certificates, and perpetuate inequality. They’re demanding an immediate reversal of the fee, a reduction to a more affordable amount, and an extension of the reprint request deadline to five years.

NECO’s registrar, Dantani Wushishi, announced the policy in Minna, Niger State, stating that the fee is subject to periodic review and reprint requests will only be approved within one year of the original certificate issuance .

However, NANS argues that this policy lacks transparency and sparks concerns about mismanagement of funds and inefficient service delivery.

NANS is advocating for affordable, accessible, and quality education, and they’re unwilling to stand idly by while education is commercialized and students are exploited

FGGC Owerri Students, Parents Cry Out Over Alleged Inefficiency, Corruption

Parents and students of Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Owerri are facing significant challenges during the clearance process for returning students. According to Ekwutosblog, the process is marred by inefficiency, with students and parents forced to wait for over 3 to 4 hours to obtain clearance forms.

The situation has sparked concerns about the management of the school, with many calling for intervention from relevant authorities. Some have even warned of an imminent stampede due to the long waiting periods.

One of the major issues raised is the alleged refusal of the school management to allow Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) elections, with claims that the management wants to impose their preferred candidates.

The clearance process, which is supposed to be a straightforward procedure, has been described as taking up to 5 to 6 hours to complete. This has led to frustration among parents and students, who are demanding change.

The hashtag #SackFGGCOwerriPrincipal is trending, with many calling for the removal of the school’s principal over allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

The situation has sparked an outcry, with many urging the Ministry of Education and the President to intervene and address the issues plaguing FGGC Owerri.

It’s fake – European-American University disowns musician Rarara’s degree

Published

The European-American University has disowned a purported honorary doctorate degree conferred on popular Hausa musician, Dauda Kahutu Rarara, describing it as fake.

The musician was awarded the degree on Saturday at a ceremony held at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, attended by dignitaries including the Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda. The event organisers presented themselves as representatives of the university.

However, in a statement published on its official website, the institution denied authorising the event or conferring any honorary degree on Mr Rarara.

“The University has not authorized any convocation to be held in this location today, and this event has been organized fraudulently without the knowledge or consent of the University,” the statement read.

The university also said it did not confer degrees on other recipients mentioned at the event, including Alhaji Ahmed Saleh jnr., Mustapha Abdullahi Bujawa, and Tarela Boroh.

It added that the individuals who paraded themselves as its officials — including Musari Audu Isyaku, who claimed to be its Northern Nigeria representative, and Idris Aliyu, who posed as a member of its governing council — had no authority to act on its behalf. The institution stressed that it does not have a governing council and has revoked Mr Aliyu’s previous fellowship appointment for his role in the alleged fraud.

The statement further clarified that its current Vice Chancellor is Professor Luca Scotto di Tella de’ Douglas di Castel di Ripa, not Dr Josephine Egbuta, a former vice chancellor dismissed earlier this year.

The university also dismissed claims about being based in Dominica and Panama, stating it is legally registered in France and holds a Royal Charter of Incorporation from the Kingdom of Bunyoro-Kitara in Uganda.

It added that it would be contacting Nigerian authorities to take action against those behind the fraudulent convocation.
