Diego Maradona’s 1986 World Cup ‘Golden Ball’ Trophy Set For Auction Despite Heirs’ Legal Setback

Diego Maradona’s family faced a legal defeat in France on Thursday as they attempted to halt the sale of the football legend’s ‘Golden Ball’ trophy from the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

The prestigious award, given to the tournament’s best player, had been missing for years before an antique dealer discovered it in Paris. Aguttes auction house in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, plans to auction it on June 6.

Maradona’s family claims the trophy, awarded to the Argentine star in November 1986 at Paris’ Lido Cabaret, was stolen during a 1989 bank robbery in Naples.

However, a court in Nanterre ruled on Thursday that the heirs failed to provide evidence of any criminal proceedings initiated by Maradona himself.

Maradona’s heirs, who believe the valuable memorabilia belongs rightfully to them, are appealing the decision.

In 2022, Maradona’s jersey from the 1986 World Cup sold for nearly $9.3 million, while the “Hand of God” ball from the quarterfinal match against England fetched $2.4 million.

The public prosecutor’s office confirmed that a criminal complaint had been filed regarding the matter.

Rio Ferdinand

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has advised his former club to sign Victor Osimhen instead of Viktor Gyokeres.

The Red Devils are in search of more firepower upfront after an underwhelming campaign.

The duo of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failed to deliver the goods, with United finishing in a disappointing 15th position on the table.

Ruben Amorim’s side also lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the UEFA Europa League.

Gyokeres, who had an outstanding campaign for Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

The forward scored 39 goals and registered eight assists to help Sporting Lisbon clinch the Portuguese League title.

Despite his impressive form in front of goal, Ferdinand believed Osimhen would be a better fit for his old club.

“I think Gyokeres, everyone’s talking about him. Again, I think if I’m looking at the market now and I had to pick him or Osimhen, I’d probably pick Osimhen because of that experience,” the former England international told the Mirror.

Galatasaray are ready to take Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson if the Blues sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen on a permanent transfer.

This was disclosed by Turkish football expert Serdar Ali Çelikler.

Speaking on the Neo Spor YouTube channel via habersarikirmizi, Ali Çelikler insisted that the Nigeria international is waiting for a move to the English Premier League, EPL, this summer.

“They [Galatasaray ] are also waiting for Osimhen. I think they will wait until August,” Ali Çelikler said.

“Osimhen is not in a hurry and is waiting for a move from England.”

He added, “If Chelsea takes Osimhen, Galatasaray will enter for Nicolas Jackson.

“What I have heard is that if Chelsea gets Osimhen, Galatasaray will also get Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea.”

Osimhen had a spectacular season-long loan at Galatasaray, winning the Turkish Super Lig title and the Turkish Cup after scoring 37 goals in all competitions for the club.
