AFCON: 4 countries eliminated from Round of 16 stage
Four countries have been eliminated from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, Round of 16 stage in Morocco.
Ekwutosblog reports that the four countries are Sudan, Tunisia, Tanzania and South Africa.
This comes after the conclusion of Sunday’s AFCON Round of 16 fixtures.
Recall that Tanzania failed to progress to the quarter-final after losing 1-0 against the host nation.
Similarly, South Africa also did not make it to the last-8 after losing 2-1 against Cameroon.
Meanwhile, more Round of 16 fixtures will take place today, Monday, as Egypt will take on the Benin Republic.
Nigeria will clash with the Mambas of Mozambique in the other last-16 fixture later tonight.
John Mikel Obi, a former Super Eagles captain, has cautioned Victor Osimhen that he is “not bigger than the team.”
Mikel Obi was speaking on his podcast about the on-field clash between Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
Both players were involved in an angry confrontation during Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Osimhen berated Lookman for not passing and signaled to the bench demanding to be substituted.
“The part where he stopped playing, running and making efforts; that part I don’t like,” Mikel Obi said.
“The part where he stood up after the game and walked straight into the dressing room. That part I didn’t like.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has lamented the denial of Super Eagles players their basic match allowances.
The Super Eagles players and coaches have declined to travel to Marrakech over unpaid bonuses.
This was revealed by BBC Africa journalist, Oluwashina Okeleji, who is in Morocco.
Nigeria are billed to take on Algeria in the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday evening.
But it is understood they have not paid their bonuses for the four matches they have played.
Eric Chelle’s men beat Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in the group fixtures, before they thrashed Mozambique 4-0 in the Round of 16.
They have taken the decision not to travel or train anymore until the bonuses issue is resolved.
