Akwa Ibom man machetes his 75-year-old father to death for selling parcels of land

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one Okon Edet for killing his 75-year-old father, Chief Okon Edet, with a machete.

 

The incident happened at Uruting village in Okobo Local Government Area of the state.

The alleged murderer was among 52 suspects arrested for various criminal activities ranging from murder, kidnap, armed robbery, child trafficking, cultism and fraud paraded by the Akwa Ibom Police Commissioner, CP Waheed Ayilara, in Uyo on Friday.

 

Ayilara said the suspect who was arrested on Wednesday confessed that he killed his father because he sold all the parcels of land he (Ayilara) had.

“Edet alleged that the late father had sold all the parcels of land he had, including the one that he gave to him to build his house as the reason for his action,” the police commissioner stated.

 

The CP assured that all the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations on their cases are concluded.

In yet another renewed demonstration of his administration’s commitment to community development and infrastructure revitalization, the Executive Chairman of Obowo Local Government Area, Hon. Barr. Obioma Johnson Ehirim, has carried out an on-site inspection of the Umukpa – Uhu, Amato Alike Autonomous Community in Alike ward axis, a region long affected by severe electrical power challenges.

The visit is a proactive step towards the kick-off of a major rural electrification intervention project in Alike, which is set to end nearly a decade of power crisis that has left households and businesses in darkness.

According to reports, the development follows the prompt notification by the Hon. Councillor representing Alike Ward Hon. Iwueke Chinonso who drew the attention of the council chairman to the plight of his constituents. The Councillor further decried the terrible nature of wiring that provided epileptic power to the affected areas. Responding swiftly, Hon. Ehirim mobilized technical experts and council engineers to inspect the affected areas and assess the immediate needs for power restoration.

Speaking during the inspection, Hon. Ehirim reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to ensure that communities in Obowo enjoys the dividends of democracy through Governor Hope Uzodimma’s grassroots-driven leadership. He emphasized that the Shared Prosperity Government has redefined the essence of local governance by empowering councils to respond directly to community needs.

> “What we are witnessing today is a practical reflection of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s vision of effective local government administration. His support has made it possible for us to move beyond paperwork and bring solutions to the people’s doorsteps,”
Hon. Ehirim stated.

He further assured that the Alike Power Restoration Project will commence soonest, bringing electricity back to the community after ten long years of blackout. The project is expected to improve local businesses, boost social life, and enhance overall security in the area.

The Ehirim-led administration continues to make notable strides across Obowo through infrastructural renewal, youth empowerment, agricultural support, and community development projects — all inspired by support of the 3R Mantra of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Recovery championed by Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma.

TINUBU, SULTAN OF SOKOTO AND GOVERNOR UZODIMMA TO LEAD NATIONAL DISCOURSE AT 2025 NIGERIAN EDITORS’ CONFERENCE

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Saad Abubakar III, and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma have been announced as key figures headlining the 2025 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) slated to hold in Abuja. The prestigious event is expected to gather media executives, policy makers and national stakeholders in an intensive discourse on democracy, governance and national unity.

According to an official statement signed by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, the two-day conference is scheduled for November 12 and 13, 2025. The opening ceremony will take place at the Presidential Villa Banquet Hall, after which sessions will continue at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Jahi, Abuja.

The Guild confirmed that President Tinubu will officially declare the conference open on November 12. The Sultan of Sokoto and media mogul Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman of ThisDay Newspapers and Arise News, will serve as chairmen of the conference, providing leadership for the intellectual engagements that will follow.

The event is expected to host over 500 participants, including editors from various media houses, government officials, diplomatic envoys, business leaders and civil society advocates. The gathering will explore critical national questions under the theme “Democratic Governance and National Cohesion: The Role of Editors,” with a sub-theme focusing on “Electoral Integrity and Trust Deficit: What Nigerians Expect in 2027.”

The NGE noted that the theme is timely, considering the country’s political climate, economic challenges and the upcoming general elections. It emphasized that editors hold a strategic position in nation building and, as gatekeepers of information, play a vital role in fostering peace, accountability and public trust.

The line-up of speakers includes top legal, academic and security experts. Renowned constitutional lawyer Prof. Awa Kalu (SAN) will present a paper on “Election Disputes and Judicial Integrity: Navigating the Thin Line Between Law and Politics,” examining the complex relationship between justice and political interests in post-election litigations.

Also scheduled to speak is Prof. Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim, Head of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Abuja. He will address the topic “State of the Nation: Imperative of Economic and Political Reforms in a Challenged Nation,” focusing on structural reforms necessary to stabilize Nigeria’s governance and economy.

The second day of the conference will feature discussions centered on security and media responsibility. Former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (rtd), will speak on “Media, Terrorism, and National Security: Addressing the Complexities,” highlighting the delicate balance between press freedom and national security interests.

Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Baze University, will deliver a paper on “The Evolving Face of Journalism: Battling Misinformation, AI Disruption, and Credibility Gap,” with a focus on how modern journalism is being reshaped by technology, fake news and ethical concerns.

In addition to the plenary sessions, the conference will feature an Executive Session on November 13, where editors will interact directly with government officials, political leaders and industry experts in a closed-door dialogue on pressing national issues. The session aims to encourage actionable solutions and reinforce collaboration between the media and leadership.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors reaffirmed that the Annual Editors’ Conference remains a major platform for shaping national conversations and proposing solutions to political, economic and social challenges. It emphasized that the 2025 edition is expected to produce resolutions that will influence policy decisions and strengthen democratic governance.

By bringing together influential voices from media, government, traditional institutions and academia, the conference seeks to reinforce the role of journalism as a pillar of democracy and a catalyst for national cohesion.

Hon. Obi Aguocha member representing ikwuano/umuahia North/umuahia South federal comstituency in the national Assembly has called on the President to handle the case of Nnamdi Kanu with utmost carefulness, speaking to the press after mazi Nnamdi kanu case today, he stressed that the action or inaction of the Federal Government on the matter could have lasting effects on the relationship between the South-East and the central government.

According to him, the South-East region has continued to experience unfavourable treatment, suggesting that there appears to be a “different set of laws applied to the south east.” He warned that such perceived injustice and unequal treatment could wipe the goodwill the President currently enjoys in the region.

Hon. Aguocha further stated that the people of the South-East will not forget the events surrounding the handling of the Nnamdi Kanu case, emphasizing that even if the current generation forgives, future generations will remember.

“whatever happens now, Nigeria should know that we will not forget, even though we forget our children and grandchildren will not forget.” He said.
