Benue elders demand apology from Suswam over “derogatory” remarks
Elders from Ukum Local Government Area in Benue State have thrown their weight behind the Ukum Young Elites (UYE), demanding an unreserved apology from Senator Gabriel Suswam over comments they described as “derogatory and insulting” to the Ukum people.
In a statement signed by more than a dozen elders on Sunday, May 18, the group issued a seven-day ultimatum for the former governor to apologise.
“We have read in several national dailies a statement credited to the Ukum Young Elites (UYE), demanding an immediate and unreserved apology from Senator Dr. Gabriel Torwua Suswam,” the elders said. “As elders of Ukum, we affirm our full support for our youths and commend their courage and efforts.”
The statement addressed recent protests during Governor Hyacinth Alia’s visit to Ukum, which they said were born out of deep frustration over repeated and deadly attacks on their communities.
They cited the killing of over 34 people in Akpuuna, the massacre of more than 100 in Ayati, and another 100 in Chito. According to the elders, these attacks occurred despite warnings about Fulani terrorist presence in Chito, which reportedly lasted five days.
“The governor visited Akpuuna, yet none of the promises he made have been fulfilled,” they said.
The elders also decried the absence of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the area and the lack of official condolences from the state government. They further noted that Hon. Paul Biam, the most senior political appointee from Ukum, was noticeably absent during Alia’s visit.
Expressing solidarity with the protesting youths, the elders said: “Ukum people are peaceful, but as the Tiv saying goes, even a goat will bite when pushed to the wall.”
They accused Senator Suswam of remaining silent in the face of the region’s suffering, only to reemerge to criticise the protests—a move they said betrayed the responsibilities of true leadership.
“It is unbecoming of a leader to stay silent in tragedy and speak only to condemn legitimate outcry,” the statement added.
Reminding Senator Suswam of his ancestral roots in Ukum, the elders warned: “The blessings that have sustained his political journey originated from Ukum. If he fails to apologise within seven days, those blessings could turn to curses.”
They called on the former senator to retract his remarks and issue a public apology without delay.
Among the signatories were Col. Edwin Jando (retd), Elder Ashe JNT, Hon. Gbugho Amokaha D., Barr. Terwase Kogi, Dr. Mfaiga Adagba, Barr. Chaha Senen P., Hon. Kyado Heen J., and Hon. Terver Khaki, among others.
