Boko Haram: Group calls for renewed efforts to free Leah Sharibu
The Gideon and Funmi Para-Mallam Peace Foundation has urged the international community to step up diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Leah Sharibu, who has now spent seven years in captivity.
Leah Shaibu was among the 110 schoolgirls kidnapped from Dapchi, Yobe State, by the Boko Haram terrorist group on February 19, 2018.
While all the other girls were later released, Leah, at the time of this report, remains in captivity, totaling 2,557 days of her capture.
Speaking in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Wednesday, during the anniversary of her abduction, the foundation’s Executive Director, Gideon Para-Mallam, expressed disappointment over what he described as the silence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration regarding Leah’s plight.
He urged the government to build on the previous administration’s efforts to secure her release and called on First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to intervene.
“As a mother, she should use every legitimate means to bring Leah home to her parents,” he said.
Para-Mallam also appealed to Leah’s captors, urging them to show mercy and release her.
“It is heartbreaking that Leah is still in captivity while all the other kidnapped Dapchi schoolgirls have been freed,” he lamented.
Drawing a comparison with the case of Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, Para-Mallam called for a unified effort across religious and ethnic lines to demand Leah’s freedom.
“As the world rallied for Malala, we must also stand up for Leah and ensure she regains her freedom,” he stated.
He reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to securing Leah’s release and commended individuals, groups, and organizations working tirelessly to support the cause.

Abuja hotel collapse: Wike orders arrest of owner, to convert land to public use
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate arrest of the owner of a multi-story hotel that collapsed in Jikwoyi, Abuja last Friday, April 4 and announced that the land would be seized for public use.
LIB had reported that the building crumbled while workers were on site, triggering an emergency response from relevant authorities.
Visiting the site today April 7, Wike said the building was constructed without approval from the FCT Department of Development Control and that all the stop-work notices sent to the builders were ignored by the developer.
Wike confirmed that while there were no fatalities, several people sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. He warned that the outcome could have been far worse.
Announcing the government’s plans for the land, Wike said the FCT Administration will take over the land for public use, noting that those responsible for the illegal construction will face prosecution in accordance with the law.
He added that the local community would be consulted to determine a suitable public-purpose project for the reclaimed site.
