BREAKING: AFCON 2025: Super Eagles trash Mozambique to qualify for quarter-finals

Nigeria qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, thanks to a 4-0 hammering of Mozambique on Monday night.

This is the first time they are winning their first four fixtures at the tournament in history.

The Super Eagles won all their Group C fixtures and again proved their superiority over the Mambas in Fez.

Ademola Lookman opened the scoring, before setting up Victor Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead before the break.

Osimhen got his brace almost immediately after being set up by Lookman again.

The fourth goal came after Akor Adams lashed in a powerful effort from inside the area.

Eric Chelle’s men will now wait for the winner of Burkina Faso vs DR Congo in the quarter-finals.

At least two countries have confirmed their places in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

This follows the conclusion of the first set of quarter-final matches on Friday.

Senegal qualified for the final four, thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Mali.

Iliman Ndiaye scored the only goal of the game in the first half of the match.

In the second match of the day, Morocco beat Cameroon 2-0 to progress into the semi-final.

Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibair scored for the hosts.

Senegal will face the winner of the Burkina Faso vs Egypt clash, while Morocco will take on the winner of the Nigeria vs Algeria game.

John Mikel Obi, a former Super Eagles captain, has cautioned Victor Osimhen that he is “not bigger than the team.”

Mikel Obi was speaking on his podcast about the on-field clash between Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

Both players were involved in an angry confrontation during Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Osimhen berated Lookman for not passing and signaled to the bench demanding to be substituted.

“The part where he stopped playing, running and making efforts; that part I don’t like,” Mikel Obi said.

“The part where he stood up after the game and walked straight into the dressing room. That part I didn’t like.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has lamented the denial of Super Eagles players their basic match allowances.

In a post via his verified X handle on Wednesday, Obi said the Super Eagles do not deserve the embarrassment and the avoidable distractions ahead of a crucial quarter-final match.

The former Anambra state governor said Nigeria must learn to fulfill its obligations.

“When will this embarrassment end? Can we get through a day without troubling news in this country?

“At a time when Nigerians need joy and unity—something the national football team, the Super Eagles, has been providing by winning matches and lifting our spirits worldwide—these same players are being denied their basic match allowances.

“A country that writes off trillions in debts for government agencies and political allies, and squanders money on grandiose, self-serving projects, now struggles to pay the basic match bonuses owed to our players.

“Nigeria deserves a better international image than this ongoing failure to honor previously agreed-upon allowances before the tournament,” he wrote.
