A dramatic scene unfolded on Tuesday at the Anambra State House of Assembly as Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo prepared to present the 2026 budget appropriation. What was expected to be a smooth legislative session quickly turned chaotic following the unexpected appearance of a suspended lawmaker.

The Assembly complex was heavily secured, with operatives of the Police, DSS, NSCDC, and other agencies stationed strategically ahead of the governor’s arrival. Inside the chamber, top government officials, commissioners, advisers, agency heads, traditional rulers, party members, and civil society groups were all seated in anticipation of the budget session.

However, the atmosphere shifted when Bernard Udemezue, the suspended member representing Ayamelum Constituency, was seen sitting comfortably inside the chamber. His presence immediately drew attention and triggered a confrontation.

The Deputy Speaker, Chukwuma Okoye, alongside Oyi Constituency representative Innocent Ojike, approached Udemezue and reminded him that his suspension was still in effect. Moments later, security personnel escorted the lawmaker out of the chamber, while Assembly leaders proceeded to clear out his supporters from the gallery.

The Deputy Speaker explained that Udemezue failed to notify the House leadership in writing after the expiration of his three month suspension an essential requirement for resumption. Udemezue, however, insisted he had followed due process and submitted all necessary documents before appearing at the plenary.

The disagreement escalated into a heated exchange, prompting security operatives to take Udemezue to the newly built legislative facility, where he is reportedly being held temporarily.
