The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) in Rivers State, Ambassador Chijioke Ihunwo, has visited the victims of the recent gas explosion that occurred in the Orazi axis of Port Harcourt.

During the visit, he expressed deep sadness over the incident and was moved to tears. He announced that the local government would cover the medical expenses of the victims.

“It’s quite unfortunate that this is happening so early in the new year,” he said. “I am deeply saddened by the number of persons affected. I was briefed about this tragic incident, which is why I am here to sympathize with those who lost their loved ones.

“As a local government, we will take responsibility for the medical bills of those injured and currently receiving treatment in the hospital. As a responsive administration, we cannot allow our people to bear this burden alone. We share in their pain,” he added.

Ambassador Ihunwo also visited the site of the explosion and announced an immediate ban on gas refilling businesses operating within residential areas in the LGA. He explained that this measure is aimed at preventing future occurrences.

“Let me announce here and now that, henceforth, no one is permitted to run a gas refilling business in residential areas within Obio/Akpor. To ensure compliance, I will establish a special committee tasked with enforcing this directive by inspecting streets and roads within the LGA.

“I urge CDC chairmen and youth leaders in the various communities to join this campaign so we can safeguard the lives and properties of our people. Anyone caught violating this ban will be arrested and prosecuted,” he warned.
