Channel attention to pillars of development – Peter Obi tells Nigerian govt

Published

on

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on governments at all levels and wealthy Nigerians to channel great attention to the pillars of development in the country.

In a post on his verified X handle on Thursday, Obi listed the pillars to be security, healthcare, education and poverty reduction.

He described them as the foundations upon which a just and prosperous society must stand.

“On Tuesday, 24 February, in continuation of my commitment to supporting critical sectors of development – healthcare, education, and poverty reduction. I visited Benin City. While there, I stopped at the Philomena School of Nursing Sciences, one of the largest nursing institutions in the region.

“This was not my first visit. Over the years, I have made it a duty to encourage both staff and students of schools across the country as they pursue excellence in healthcare training. In further demonstration of this commitment to Philomena School of Nursing Sciences, and to support the school’s facilities as I have done previously, I donated the sum of fifteen million naira.

“I call on the government at all levels, as well as wealthy Nigerians, to channel greater attention and resources toward the critical pillars of development – security, healthcare, education and poverty reduction,” he wrote.

Gov Makinde Speaks on Dumping PDP

Published

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has stated that he has no intention of leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party under which he was elected.

He made this declaration on Thursday in Ibadan during the Omituntun Ramadan Lecture.

Addressing party members and supporters at the event, Makinde affirmed his continued loyalty to the PDP, stressing that he remains fully committed to the party and its ideals. He made it clear that he is not considering any move away from the platform.

According to the governor, the PDP should focus more on delivering good governance and tangible results to the people rather than building support around any single individual. He emphasised that public service must remain the primary responsibility of every political office holder.

His remarks come amid growing speculation about possible defections and political realignments within the PDP as politicians begin preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Makinde also spoke on the importance of unity within the party. He noted that while governors and other leaders have the right to make personal political decisions, such actions should not harm the party or weaken its structure.

He added that internal disagreements must be managed carefully to ensure the PDP remains strong and focused on fulfilling its responsibilities to Nigerians.

Opposition Leaders Reject Amended Electoral Act 2026

Published

Leaders of opposition political parties in Nigeria have rejected the amended Electoral Act 2026 recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and other major party leaders, criticized the process through which the National Assembly passed the legislation. They described the process as flawed and lacking proper consultation.

Speaking at a press briefing, Ajuri Ahmed of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is working to position President Tinubu as the only credible presidential contender ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ahmed stated that information available to the opposition indicates that election results can be electronically transmitted from all polling units across the country. He questioned why the new law still retains a provision for manual transmission of results.

He also expressed surprise at the speed with which the President approved the bill, noting that similar urgency had not been shown in signing other pieces of legislation.

According to him, the recently conducted Federal Capital Territory election explains why the APC hurriedly ensured the signing of the Electoral Act.

The coalition of opposition leaders further rejected the outcome of the Federal Capital Territory Area Council election. They argued that the poll served as a major test for the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which, in their view, he failed.

Thugs attack Edo ADC secretariat, 24 hours after Jarret Tenebe, APC chairman’s threat

Hoodlums suspected to be political thugs on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, again attacked the Edo State secretariat.

Ekwutosblog reports that the incident allegedly occurred a few minutes after the state leadership of the party received Barrister Olumide Akpata.

Akpata was received by Mr. Peter Obi, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, Senator Roland Owie, Prof. Oserhiemen Osunbor, among others.

A Facebook user identified as Hon. Shedrach Udugbai shared the incident on her wall.

In a viral video, Udugbai showed how several vehicles were destroyed and a woman assaulted by the suspected thugs. The video also showed several plastic chairs used at the event vandalized.

According to him, the ADC secretariat in Edo was attacked by suspected APC thugs minutes after Peter Obi left the secretariat. They reportedly came in unnumbered vehicles, wearing masks and carrying guns.

“The thugs shot one woman in the neck, and she is currently receiving treatment in the hospital. They beat up another man and broke his head. Many were left injured.

“Monday Okpebholo, who is the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, cannot pretend to be unaware of what is happening.

“So ADC cannot gather again in Edo State. This is shameful. We will not be intimidated. We will not be cornered,” he said.

He alleged that the thugs also went to Chief John Odigie Oyegun’s house to attack vehicles there following the ADC secretariat incident.

The property destroyed by the suspected political thugs was clearly visible.

Ekwutosblog  recalls that the ADC secretariat was previously attacked on February 5, 2026, about 20 days ago, by suspected political thugs who made a failed attempt to set the party’s building ablaze.

Ekwutosblog  also recalls that the Edo State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarret Tenebe, had on Monday, February 23, 2026, during the commissioning of 54 construction equipment for 18 local government chairmen in the state by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, warned ADC not to campaign in the state or obstruct the state governor, Monday Okpebholo.

Tenebe said the warning was not a threat but advice.

“I advised the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) not to come into Edo State as the governor is working and the state is not for other political parties. I urge opposition parties not to constitute obstacles to development.

“I want to send a message to that party, ADC. Please, our governor is working. We are happy with what we are seeing. Edo State people are happy, everybody is happy. It is a warning and not a threat. If they like, they should take it, and if they like, let them not take it. If they try to be an obstacle to the promises we made or the number of votes we are going to give to Mr. President, if they try to stand in our way, we will deal with them accordingly,” he stated.
