Chimaroke’s assets: Lawmaker gives EFCC one-week ultimatum, says N400m unaccounted
A member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Harrison Ogara has given the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, seven days to reverse its handover of four properties forfeited by Rainbownet Nigeria Limited, a company owned by a former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani, to the Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON, in Enugu State.
It could be recalled that the EFCC said it handed over Nnamani’s companies to AMCON in Enugu.
However, Ogara in a letter to the EFCC Chairman, said the properties should be returned to Enugu State, failure which he would initiate legal process.
The lawmaker also queried the whereabouts of the N400m recovered from Sam Ejiofor’s overhead tank, which he said remained unaccounted for till date.
The letter reads, “Few days ago, news broke through the EFCC’s social media handles that your commission has handed over some forfeited property belonging to the former governor of Enugu State, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani to Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON).
“These property according to your commission include, one bungalow, one warehouse and three duplexes all located at N0 3/4 Pocket Estate, Independence Layout, Enugu; 12 rooms of one storey semi-detached building located at N0 35B Abakaliki Road, Enugu; one duplex of six rooms, located at N0 3A Mount Street, Park Avenue, Enugu and one duplex of six rooms, located at 3C Mount Street, Park Avenue, Enugu.
“As a representative of the people of Igbo Eze South (part owners of the recovered assets), I have been inundated with several calls as to why your commission should hand over the assets belonging to the government and good people of Enugu State to AMCON.
“Sir, it is on record that on April 2024, your commission handed over 14 property linked to the former governor of the State, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani initially forfeited to the Federal Government back to the government and people of Enugu State without any information to the House of Assembly till date.
“During that brief ceremony you disclosed that the road to the forfeiture dated back to 2007 when you started the prosecution of the former governor.
“Kindly note also that all the monies siezed by EFCC including N400m from Sam Ejiofor’s overhead tank remain unaccounted for till date.
“Again, we are seeing a handover of another set of properties of the people of Enugu State to an unknown body that has no bearing with the assets recovery litigations that had lingered in court for close to two decades.
“Sir, for the mere fact that there was no nexus between the issues arising from the forfeited property in Enugu State linked to ex-governor Nnamani and AMCON, I, on behalf of the good people of Igbo Eze South that I represent demand that the EFCC return all those property handed over to AMCON to Enugu state within seven days.
“Failure to comply with this demand, I would have no choice than to seek redress before a court of competent jurisdiction and relying on the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.”
