The Government of the People’s Republic of China has voiced firm support for Nigeria amid rising diplomatic tensions with the United States, following threats of possible military action issued by U.S. President Donald Trump.
During a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized China’s stance against external interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations. She reiterated China’s commitment to defending Nigeria’s right to self-governance and independent decision-making.
“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China strongly supports the Nigerian government in steering its people toward a development path that aligns with its unique national realities,” Mao stated.
She further condemned the use of religion or human rights as justification for foreign intervention or coercion. “China firmly opposes any nation using religion or human rights as an excuse to interfere in another country’s internal matters, or to resort to threats of sanctions or force,” she said.
Her remarks followed Trump’s controversial claims accusing Nigerian authorities of religious persecution against Christians and hinting at potential military involvement. The Nigerian government has categorically denied these allegations.
Tensions escalated after the U.S. State Department, on October 31, redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged violations of religious freedom, a move that has further strained diplomatic relations.
China’s statement is widely interpreted as a significant show of friendship and diplomatic backing for Nigeria, as the nation navigates increasing pressure from the United States.
This development underscores Beijing’s growing influence in Africa and its ongoing support for non-interference, sovereignty, and mutual cooperation among partner countries.
