The Imo State Environmental Transformation Commission (ENTRACO) has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic road accident that occurred in Owerri on Monday, November 10, 2025, resulting in the loss of life and injury to another individual. The unfortunate incident took place around St. Mulumba Catholic Church, along Akachi Road, and has since drawn public concern and grief.

According to preliminary reports, the accident happened during an enforcement operation by ENTRACO officials, who were carrying out routine activities in line with the state government’s traffic and environmental safety directives. In the process, a vehicle reportedly collided with a motorcycle conveying two young men, leading to a fatal impact.

Witnesses described the scene as devastating, with residents and passersby gathering in shock and sorrow. The incident sparked public calls for a comprehensive investigation into the enforcement methods of state agencies, particularly those involved in traffic control and environmental regulation.

In a formal statement issued shortly after the incident, Mr. Ifeanyi Nwokedi, ENTRACO’s Director of Operations, confirmed that one of the Commission’s personnel had been handed over to the Nigerian Police for proper investigation. He assured the public that ENTRACO would fully cooperate with law enforcement authorities to uncover the truth and ensure justice for all parties involved.

> “We strongly condemn this unfortunate and avoidable incident, which has plunged our Commission into mourning,”
Mr. Nwokedi stated.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to the bereaved family, while our prayers are with the injured victim for a quick and full recovery.”

The Director explained that the mishap occurred while an ENTRACO official was relocating an impounded Ford Edge (SEL) vehicle for obstructing traffic near Relief Junction, Egbu Road. During the process, the vehicle reportedly came in contact with a motorcycle rider allegedly driving against traffic, leading to the fatal collision.

ENTRACO further reiterated that the ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles within Owerri Municipality remains in effect, emphasizing that the policy was designed to enhance road safety and minimize the risk of accidents. The Commission urged residents to comply strictly with traffic regulations and avoid dangerous practices such as one-way driving and restricted area violations.

In response to rising public emotions following the incident, the Imo State Police Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have also assured residents that all findings will be handled transparently.

Meanwhile, community leaders and civil society advocates have called on the Imo State Government to review the operational frameworks of its taskforces, emphasizing the need for improved training, accountability, and humane engagement in enforcement exercises.

While mourning the loss, ENTRACO reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting safety, orderliness, and public discipline across Imo State in alignment with the Shared Prosperity Vision of His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Governor of Imo State.

“Road safety is a collective duty. We appeal to all motorists and road users to exercise caution and obey the rules to safeguard lives,”
the Commission added.

As investigations continue, residents are urged to remain calm and allow due process to take its course. ENTRACO assured that lessons will be learned from the tragedy to prevent future occurrences.

May the soul of the departed rest in peace, and may the injured recover swiftly.
