The Special Adviser to the Governor on Solid Minerals and Mining, Mr. Samuel Onyinye Okoro, disclosed this in a public service announcement issued on Saturday, titled: “Enugu State Begins Formalisation of Sand Mining Sector to Enhance Safety, Accountability, and Revenue Generation”.
The Enugu State government has revealed that over 20 lives were tragically lost in mining pits in the last few years due to poor safety practices and unregulated operations.
Okoro, who is also the Chairman of the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee, Enugu State Chapter, said the government has now initiated a comprehensive formalisation of mining activities across the state to enhance safety, accountability, and revenue generation.
According to him, the formalisation of mining activities in the state became necessary to address these issues, and the government has introduced several measures, including mandatory registration and unionisation for mining operators, establishment of a unified burrow pit owners union, and enforcement of safety standards.
The government will also ensure that operators pay royalties and levies, including community development levies, to benefit host communities. Additionally, community mining committees will be established to promote transparency and accountability in the management of community funds. The government has also directed that all sealed pits remain closed until safety concerns are addressed.
