Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has announced the immediate disengagement of all commissioners and political appointees in his government.
The development, which was made public through a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, on Wednesday evening in Port Harcourt, came in response to the recent Supreme Court judgment that has reshaped the political direction of the state.
Governor Fubara, speaking during a special valedictory session with his executive council as part of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations, commended the outgoing officials for their dedication and contributions to governance over the last two years. He acknowledged their role in advancing the progress of Rivers State and wished them well in future endeavors.
The statement partly read:
“His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed deep appreciation to members of his cabinet for their invaluable service to the state, while also emphasizing the importance of unity as Nigerians mark another Independence anniversary. He urged citizens to support the President’s efforts in building a stronger, more secure, and prosperous nation.”
In line with the judgment, the governor confirmed that all commissioners and affected public officers have been relieved of their duties with immediate effect.
Reassuring Rivers people, Fubara pledged to continue steering the state with a “renewed sense of purpose and commitment,” stressing that his administration remains focused on delivering good governance despite the changes in his cabinet.
It will be recalled that Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), who governed the state during the emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu, had earlier suspended all political appointees of the Fubara administration, dissolved boards, and halted the activities of several parastatals.
Since the end of emergency rule on September 18, the fate of the governor’s appointees had been uncertain. The Rivers State House of Assembly, at its maiden sitting after the transition, requested Governor Fubara to present a new list of commissioner nominees for screening, in addition to the 2025 budget proposal awaiting legislative consideration.
