Govt paid our fees, took care of needs – Ex-Govs Mu’azu, Aliero lament decay in education sector
A former governor of Bauchi State, Adamu Mu’azu and his counterpart from Kebbi State, Adamu Aliero, who is the senator representing Kebbi Central senatorial district, have lamented the decay in the country’s education system.
According to them, the system had seriously deteriorated since 49 years ago when they left the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria.
Both former governors, alongside the Sarkin Karshi-Abuja, His Royal Highness Mohammed Ismaila, spoke at the SBS ABU Zaria 76/77 set maden reunion in Abuja on Friday.
Aliero, however, expressed optimism that with some programmes initiated by the current administration, part of which is the student loan, many Nigerian students will have access to funds.
He said, “When we were in school, the government took care of our education, even gave us transport money to go to our institutions and not only that, the government took care of all our needs, including even Laundry.
“But certainly, things have changed drastically now because perhaps population, paucity funds on the part of the government, and many other challenges the government is now facing.
“However, we are really delighted to say that some of us who are in government have gone remarkably well. We left building legacies behind, and we are very proud of that.”
Asked if there is the possibility for the government to invest more in the citizenry, like the way people enjoyed benefits of governance in those old days, especially in the education sector, the former governor said, “Yes, there is every possibility of doing that, because recently, the President has passed the bill, or the national government has passed a bill on student loan fund where Indigent students can have access to funds so that they can pursue the educational career right from the first level till out of university.
“So over 500 billion naira had been set aside for that, and they’re going to continue. So I’m getting optimistic that the government will be able to continue funding education, though not like it was before.”
On his part, Senator Adamu Mu’azu challenged this generation of Nigerian youths to show more interest in leadership of the country, citing examples of former heads of state, General Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Babangida and others who picked up leadership positions at a very young age.
He said “This is your ball. You must be careful…I think you are really behaving like children. This is your generation. That is why you see a lot of you refuse to offer yourselves for public service, and at the end of the day, we end up getting half-cooked, uneducated people to lead us. And that is not good.
“Some of you are much younger. Some are at the age of our children. You must take up the banner.”
On his part, Mohammed Ismaila said public institutions such as government universities, will continue to decay until the government does two things, which include- to engage the alumni. If you see all the great universities in the world, they engage their alumni.
“Most of the time, the Universal authorities don’t reach us [alumni]. They should have a large alumni office and have a data especially this age of internet and get to us and say, ‘look, this is the kind of project we want to do in this department, in this faculty, even if you contribute just five naira per month, or 500 Naira per month, you know, but there’s no synergy. But they do not engage the alumni.
“The second thing is for them to engage the private sector. They don’t engage us. Nobody has ever had to call us in our departments…”
Meanwhile, Aliero was part of the federal lawmakers from Kebbi State who met with President Bola Tinubu on Friday as they finalized a decision to join the All Progressives Congress, APC, from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Surulere I lawmaker Desmond Elliot has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress Lagos House of Assembly primaries, citing intimidation across multiple zones.

Political Shockwave in Rivers as Fubara Pulls Out of APC Governorship Race, Backs Party’s Candidate
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries scheduled to take place on Thursday, a development that has stirred fresh political conversations across the state.
The governor announced his decision in a personally signed statement titled “My Decision to Withdraw from the Rivers State Gubernatorial Primaries,” which was released on Wednesday night.
In the statement, Fubara explained that his withdrawal followed wide consultations with political associates, stakeholders, and supporters. He stated that the decision was taken in the overall interest of peace, unity, and stability within the APC and Rivers State at large.
According to the governor, politics should not be allowed to divide the people or create unnecessary tension within the party. He stressed that preserving unity among party members and maintaining stability in the state remain more important than personal political ambition.
Fubara further pledged his total loyalty and support to whoever eventually emerges as the APC governorship candidate, assuring party faithful that he remains committed to the success and progress of the party ahead of the next general elections.
The Rivers governor also appreciated his supporters across the state for standing by him throughout the political process. He thanked party leaders, youth groups, women supporters, and political associates who had continued to show him solidarity and encouragement.
He urged his supporters not to see his withdrawal as the end of his political journey, but rather as a decision made in the collective interest of the party and the state. He also appealed to them to remain peaceful, united, and committed to the ideals of the APC.
Political observers have described the development as one of the biggest political surprises in Rivers State in recent times, especially considering the growing speculations and intense political alignments ahead of the governorship primaries.
Analysts believe the governor’s withdrawal may reshape the political calculations within the APC and influence the direction of the party’s governorship race moving forward.
The announcement has continued to generate mixed reactions from political stakeholders and residents across Rivers State. While some supporters described the move as strategic and mature, others expressed surprise over the governor’s sudden exit from the contest.
Several party faithful, however, commended Fubara for placing party unity and stability above personal ambition, noting that his decision may help reduce internal tensions and strengthen the APC ahead of the elections.
The development has also intensified attention on the remaining aspirants contesting for the APC governorship ticket, as consultations and political meetings continue ahead of the primary election.
Many observers believe the governor’s endorsement of the eventual APC candidate could play a major role in shaping the outcome of the party’s governorship battle and future political structure in the state.
As political activities continue to gather momentum in Rivers State, all eyes are now on the APC primaries and the next phase of political developments expected to unfold in the coming days.
