Speed Darlington has issued an official statement clarifying his recent comments about Burna Boy, stating:

“I was only exploring my comedic side and didn’t mean to defame Burna Boy or disrespect his mother.”

Speed Darlington, a Nigerian singer and social media personality, had made some controversial remarks about Burna Boy, which sparked outrage and backlash from fans and followers.

Recall that Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington was arrested and detained following a petition from fellow musician, Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy, alleging cyberstalking.

The controversial Akpi musician was released to lawyer Deji Adeyanju after meeting conditions stipulated by police at the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team’s Department in the Guzape area of Abuja.

Ekwutosblog learnt on Tuesday that Speed Darlington was arrested last Friday.

Adeyanju earlier on Tuesday told SaharaReporters that he had seen the petition written against Darlington by afrobeat musician, Burna Boy

Speed Darlington was arrested in Lagos and taken to various formations in the state before he was taken to Abuja and detained by the IRT team, which accused him of cyberstalking Burna Boy.

Adeyanju noted that there was nothing in the petition to warrant Darlington’s arrest.

“I have met Speed Darlington and he’s in good spirits, we are working to get him released on bail as soon as possible,” Adeyanju told SaharaReporters earlier on Tuesday.

A police ACP investigating the case told Adeyanju that the police could not release a copy of the petition to him but allowed the lawyer read and digest the content.

“Stop picking actors based on followers” — Broadcaster Emma Ugolee slams Nollywood’s Unwritten rule

Published

Media personality Emma Ugolee is calling out Nollywood’s growing preference for social media popularity over actual acting talent.

In a strongly-worded post, the seasoned broadcaster described the industry’s “unwritten rule” of casting actors based on their follower count as “sickening” and unfair to trained professionals.

Using two lead actors from a trending series, To Kill a Monkey, as an example, Ugolee pointed out that despite having impressive acting chops and being well-respected by both male and female fanbases, the actors have relatively low follower counts.

“Why?” he asked. “Because they’re not trading their privacy, nudity, or personal drama for clout.”

He went further to contrast them with a popular internet content creator whose massive following stems from asking women to wiggle their bodies, mimic bedroom sounds, and share their favourite sex positions—all on camera. According to Ugolee, these are the types of people Nollywood prioritises for casting, simply because they draw attention online.

“This is in no way to make fun of what he’s doing,” he clarified. “But to show you exactly what it takes to get the engagement Nollywood is asking of these professional actors as tickets to get acting gigs.”
