IF A JUDGE DOES SOMETHING UNFAIR OR UNPLEASANT
Remain respectful in court – Even if you feel offended, never argue rudely with a judge. You must stay calm and professional.
Make a formal complaint – If the issue is serious (for example, bias, misconduct, or harassment), you can submit a petition to:
The Chief Judge of the state (for State High Court judges).
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (for Supreme Court or Federal High Court judges).
Report to Judicial Service Commission – Each state has a Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for state judges, and at the federal level, the National Judicial Council (NJC) handles complaints about judges.
- Seek support from NBA – If you are already a lawyer, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) can help you in raising complaints against judicial misconduct.
- Provide evidence – Any complaint against a judge must be backed by solid evidence (documents, records, witnesses). Without proof, the complaint will likely be dismissed.
Judges are powerful, but they are not above the law. If they act wrongly, you must follow the correct legal and institutional channels — respectfully and with evidence.
