The Imo State House of Assembly has urged Governor Hope Uzodinma to approve the establishment of Imo State College of Nursing Sciences and Midwifery, Umudi, Nkwerre LGA, as an independent State-owned professional institution.

The House also asked the state government to integrate a Department of Autism and Special Needs Studies into the new College to ensure specialized training and research in the neglected critical area.

The House reached the resolutions while deliberating on a motion moved by the member representing Nkwerre Constituency, Nze Chisom Ojukwu and supported by 14 other Lawmakers as co-sponsors.

Presenting the motion on the floor of the House, Ojukwu said the existing schools of nursing and midwifery in the state are not sufficient to absorb the rising number of qualified applicants seeking admission every year.

He disclosed that the former NYSC Orientation Camp at Umudi in Nkwerre Local Government Area is presently underutilized, despite having vast land, durable structures, and a strategic location suitable for conversion into an academic institution.

The Lawmaker was optimistic that establishing a new, independent Imo State College of Nursing Sciences and Midwifery at Umudi will expand access to professional training, improve healthcare, manpower development, and maximize the use of existing State assets, adding that the inclusion of a dedicated Department of Autism and Special Needs Studies will position the State as a pioneer in addressing underserved area of healthcare education, attract partnerships, and provide specialized training and services to vulnerable populations.

The House after much deliberations on the motion, urged government to direct the Commissioners of Education and Health to undertake an immediate feasibility and needs assessment of the Umudi site and submit a comprehensive report to the State Executive Council and to provide adequate funding for rehabilitation and upgrading of the existing structures at Umudi to meet modern academic, clinical, and research standards.

It also called on the government to mandate collaboration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and other relevant special-needs accreditation bodies to secure full approval, accreditation, and long-term sustainability of the college.

Serenity Royale Hospital has refuted claims that it conducted any drug-related tests on actress Regina Daniels.

The hospital said this in a public statement released on Thursday evening, following the trending medical report allegedly from the hospital confirming Regina Daniels’ drug addiction.

Recall that Regina Daniels’ estranged husband, Senator Ned Nwoko had accused her of drug addiction and insisted that the actress must submit herself for rehabilitation.

The accusation came after Regina called out the Senator for domestic abuse amid their ongoing messy breakup.

However, laboratory tests purportedly conducted by the hospital surfaced on the social media on Wednesday, showing toxic levels of marijuana, cocaine, morphine, opiates, and alcohol in her system.

Denying conducting any test on the actress, the hospital stated that the alleged medical report was fabricated.

Speaking in a statement signed by its management, the hospital said “Our attention has been drawn to a post (on an alleged MID TERM HOME DETOX REPORT) being circulated online in the name of Serenity Royale Hospital with respect to Mrs Nwoko Regina.

“We wish to state clearly that the publication and circulation of the said post containing classified information did not emanate from us and respectfully request the public to disregard same.”

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed its commitment to enforce the total ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small-volume PET or glass bottles below 200ml by December 2025, in line with the recent directive of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, explained that the action, ordered by the Nigerian Senate and endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, underscores the Agency’s statutory mandate to safeguard public health and protect vulnerable populations—particularly children, adolescents, and young adults—from harmful alcohol use.

She emphasized that the ban is not punitive but protective, aimed at preserving the health and future of Nigerian youth. According to her, the decision is rooted in scientific evidence and public health considerations, as government cannot continue to sacrifice citizens’ well-being for short-term economic gains.

It is gathered that the Agency will continue to work collaboratively with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to implement nationwide sensitization campaigns on the health and social dangers of alcohol consumption in sachets and small bottles.
