In line with its nationwide monthly campaign, the Imo State Special Marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) took to the highways on Saturday for the September
edition of the National Patrol, sensitising motorists and commuters on safe road practices.
State Coordinator of the Special Marshals, Comrade Joy Fide-Nwaogu, highlighted that the exercise—conducted every third Saturday across the federation—is designed to reinforce traffic discipline, promote vehicle roadworthiness, and support the FRSC in reducing crashes on Nigerian roads. She described the patrol as a selfless service, aimed at “giving back to society” while complementing the agency’s statutory mandate.
During the outreach, motorists were reminded to adhere to traffic regulations, subject their vehicles to routine checks, and avoid reckless behaviour that endangers lives. Comrade Fide-Nwaogu also used the occasion to call for fresh membership into the Special Marshals, inviting men and women of integrity who are gainfully employed to volunteer their time and resources in advancing humanitarian service.
Reflecting on her short tenure in office, she noted that significant progress had already been achieved. She explained that various units have been empowered to run weekly patrols, host enlightenment sessions, and embark on community-based safety projects. One such initiative was the repair of the collapsed ceiling in the office of the FRSC Head of Operations, Owerri—a gesture she described as proof of the marshals’ commitment to service beyond the road.
The patrol also served as a platform to restate the consequences of non-compliance. Comrade Fide-Nwaogu cautioned that “life has no duplicate,” stressing that defaulters risk having their vehicles impounded and being mandated to undergo corrective safety re-education.
The coordinator’s efforts earned praise from stakeholders present. Dr. Chinedu Okonkwo, Consultant Otolaryngologist at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri, and Secretary of Njaba RS. 9.43 Unit, together with Rev. Anayo of the Bankers’ Unit, commended her vibrant leadership, noting the renewed drive she had brought to the corps in just two months.
Echoing similar sentiments, Hon. Willie Okolieogwo, Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and an honorary member of the Njaba Unit, called on drivers to prioritise safety by maintaining roadworthy vehicles, securing valid licences, and adhering strictly to traffic laws. He reiterated that the state government considers the safety of its citizens paramount and will not condone violations that put lives at risk.
The programme concluded with a general meeting where patrol leaders presented reports, attendance was reviewed, and members deliberated on welfare and operational matters critical to the growth of the group.
