In what many have described as a reaffirmation of his commitment to true democracy and grassroots inclusion, Governor Hope Uzodimma has set in motion the process for conducting local government elections across Imo State.

This follows the official Notice of Election issued by the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), dated 18th September 2025, in accordance with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended). The notice signals the mandatory 360 days preparation period ahead of the 2026 Local Government Council Elections.

The announcement, signed by Chief Charles Ejiogu, Chairman of ISIEC, formally notifies political stakeholders and registered parties of the Commission’s readiness to conduct elections into the offices of Chairmen and Councillors across the 27 Local Government Areas of the state.

Observers view this move as another indication of Governor Uzodimma’s resolve to restore full democratic governance at the grassroots level. It underscores his administration’s belief that the local government system remains the foundation of participatory democracy and effective service delivery to the people.

By ensuring that the third tier of government is run by duly elected officials rather than appointed caretakers, the Uzodimma administration continues to distinguish itself as one rooted in constitutional order and accountability.

Political analysts note that the governor’s approach reflects both the religious observance of due process and a judicious commitment to democratic principles, ensuring that governance remains people-driven at every level.

With the election notice now in place, ISIEC has urged all registered political parties to take note, as further details on the electoral timetable will be released in due course.

For many Imo citizens, this marks a new phase in Governor Uzodimma’s democratic journey; one that places power back where it rightfully belongs: in the hands of the people.
