Acting Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu has pledged to lead a police force that respects human rights and rejects misconduct.

He spoke on Wednesday shortly after he was sworn in by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

His appointment came a day after the resignation of former Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun.

Disu said his emergence was unexpected and expressed gratitude to the president for finding him worthy of the position.

He said the recognition of his past assignments and achievements by the president moved him deeply and also placed a heavy responsibility on him to deliver results.

According to him, his leadership will focus on discipline, proper training and better welfare for officers.

He said police personnel must understand that citizens are their employers and that no police force can succeed without public support. He added that motivated officers are more likely to give their best in service.

The new police boss stated that misconduct within the force would not be tolerated. He said he would make it clear to officers that unlawful actions and abuse of power would no longer be accepted. He also said he plans to enforce strict measures against corruption within the force.

He said: “My top priority? I like one of the first lectures I’m going to have with my men. I’m going to talk to them, let them know that the citizens of the country are the boss.

“It’s very, very important for them to know that no police anywhere in the world can succeed without the cooperation of members of the public.

“I’m going to ensure that I take their welfare into consideration, because people who are motivated put in their best.

“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over. I will ensure that I train them and encourage them to ensure they follow human rights.

“I will try to follow a regime of zero tolerance to corruption.

“The country is facing a particular problem now, issue of insurgency. I know all police officers around have been doing their best. All I need to do is to channel their morale and their thoughts to make things better.”

Heightened security developments have unfolded in Nigeria’s North-East as three United States military aircraft reportedly landed at the Nigerian Air Force base in Maiduguri, Borno State—an area long troubled by insurgent activities linked to Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram. The aircraft arrivals are said to form part of a broader movement of U.S. Air Force cargo planes into West Africa within a short operational window.

Security analyst Brant Philip disclosed via X that six U.S. Air Force cargo aircraft entered the West African region between February 6 and 14, 2026. According to his account, all six planes first landed in Accra, Ghana, before five continued onward to Nigerian Air Force installations. Among those that proceeded to Nigeria, one C-17A aircraft reportedly arrived at Kainji Airbase, while a C-130J-30 and three additional C-17A aircraft touched down at Maiduguri Airbase in Borno State. Notably, reports indicate that the planes departed the bases on the same day of arrival, suggesting rapid operational coordination.

Maiduguri Airbase is widely regarded as a strategic hub in the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign in the region, particularly in confronting ISWAP’s presence across rural parts of Borno. In a related development, The Wall Street Journal reported on February 10 that discussions were underway regarding the potential deployment of approximately 200 U.S. troops to Nigeria, based on disclosures from American and Nigerian officials. As of the time of reporting, however, neither the Nigerian military nor U.S. authorities have released formal statements clarifying the purpose or scope of the recent aircraft movements, leaving observers to closely monitor unfolding events in the security landscape.

Goldie who was one of the sought-after singers in Nigeria d!ed on February 14, 2013.

Sharing a video from his visit to her gravesite via his Instagram page, Denrele wrote

‘’Today isn’t just Valentine’s Day.

It’s GOLDIE Day.

Thirteen years ago, Heaven gained a headliner and we lost a hurricane in Heels.

But Legends don’t die — they echo.

Every February 14th, while the world is drowning in roses and romance, I visit you with a wreath…..

and with words.

Because LOVE isn’t only for the living.

Love is memory.

Love is loyalty.

Love is saying your name out loud so it never fades.

GOLDIE!

You were glitter before glitter became a filter.

You were fearless before “soft life” became a hashtag.

You were Theatre.

You were colour.

You were audacity wrapped in melody.

I dropped flowers on your tomb today, but what I really dropped was gratitude.

For the music.

For the madness.

For the magic.

They tried to move on.

But I refuse to let your name become past tense.

So here’s my annual reminder to the world:

Stream her songs.

SAY HER NAME

Celebrate her light.

Because some stars don’t set…

They just change stages.

Forever your friend. Forever your megaphone.

P.S:

Heaven may have booked you for Eternity,

but Earth still dances to your Rhythm.

CONTINUE TO REST IN POWER, BIMPE SUSAN *GOLDIE* HARVEY’’
