According to Monitng, the civic technology platform tracking public services, the only school in the area — Karfi Primary School — is in a deplorable state, despite the billions of naira allocated annually to the education sector in the state.

Thousands of children in Karfi community, Takai Local Government Area of Kano State, have been left without access to safe and functional learning facilities for more than 10 years, a civic group has revealed.

According to Monitng, the civic technology platform tracking public services, the only school in the area — Karfi Primary School — is in a deplorable state, despite the billions of naira allocated annually to the education sector in the state.

During a recent visit to the school, the group said it observed collapsing roofs, broken benches, leaking classrooms and unsafe conditions that force pupils to learn in an environment “unfit for human use.”

“We visited Karfi Primary School in Takai LGA, Kano State, and the condition of the facility is appalling,” Monitng stated.

“The roofs are decayed and collapsing, classrooms are dark, unventilated, and unsafe. Pupils are forced to learn in an environment unfit for human use yet this is the only school serving thousands of children in the Karfi community.”

“Despite the billions of Naira allocated annually to education in Kano State, schools like Karfi Primary remain in ruins. The reality on the ground reflects years of abandonment and failure to prioritise public education.”

“Kano State currently ranks highest in Nigeria for the number of out-of-school children 1.89m, according to The ICIR. In Karfi alone, over 10,000 children have been denied access to a safe, functional learning space for more than a decade.”

The group further noted that learning is often suspended entirely during rainfall, as pupils sit on broken furniture in poorly ventilated classrooms under leaking roofs.

“Children in this community sit on broken benches under leaking roofs, exposed to harsh weather and the constant risk of injury. On rainy days, classes are suspended completely. This is the reality of basic education for thousands of Nigerian children.”

Residents of Karfi have reportedly made repeated appeals to both state and federal representatives, but Monitng said no action has been taken so far.

“The people of Karfi have written repeatedly to both state and federal representatives calling for urgent intervention. Still, nothing has been done. Meanwhile, education budgets are filled with grand allocations that rarely translate to real impact at the grassroots.”

The group described the situation as a gross failure of leadership, calling for immediate intervention by the Kano State Government.

“This is a betrayal of public trust. The state and local governments must be held accountable and take immediate action to renovate and equip Karfi Primary School.”

“Education is the foundation of development. Every child regardless of location deserves safe, quality learning. Karfi cannot wait any longer.”
