Mbaduku/Obudu Crisis: Family of slain Tiv driver demands justice over killing in Cross River

Published

on

The family of Mr Ternenge Iorkyaa Ikpanor, a Tiv commercial driver, allegedly lynched by a mob in Obudu, Cross River State, is demanding justice, a transparent investigation, and national accountability over what they have described as a “barbaric and inhuman” act.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Dr Elijah Terdoo Ikpanor, speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, recounted the traumatic details of the incident which occurred on Friday, July 18, 2025.

The victim, fondly known as “Agege,” was reportedly stoned and butchered to death by a mob in Obudu town under circumstances the family believes were both criminal and ethnically motivated.

The late Mr Ikpanor hailed from Mbanyam, Mbaduku in Benue State. He was remembered as a hardworking and peaceful man who made his living through commercial transportation.

The family linked his murder to rising tensions associated with a separate conflict between the Mbazerem community of Mbaduku and the Abonkip people of Obudu, despite the murder taking place far from the conflict zone.

“This barbaric act has plunged his family, his community, and all peace-loving Nigerians into an unimaginable state of grief,” Dr Ikpanor said.

“This is not only a tragedy for the Tiv people but a national blemish on our collective humanity.”

While appreciating the initial response of the Inspector-General of Police, the family insists on a full investigation, the arrest and prosecution of all those responsible, and the immediate release of the victim’s remains for burial.

They also urged the National Human Rights Commission to launch an independent probe and provide both legal and emotional support to the widow and children of the deceased.

“This is a defining moment. If we fail to act now, we risk normalizing extrajudicial killings and ethnic violence,” the family stated.

The family ended their address with a solemn appeal to the government to uphold justice, ensure accountability, and protect the rights of all Nigerians regardless of ethnicity or location.

“God bless the memory of our dear son, brother, and husband,” Dr. Ikpanor added.

At the time of this report, the police are yet to provide updates on arrests or progress in the ongoing investigation.
