‎The Federal Government through its Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has said fuel tankers will no longer be allowed to move at night.

‎The Chief Executive of the NMDPRA, Farouk Ahmed, stated this in Lagos on Wednesday at a sensitisation programme for petroleum tanker drivers, organised in collaboration with Petroleum Tanker Drivers of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, the National Association of Road Transport Owners, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and other agencies.

‎Ahmed, who was represented by the Executive Director, Health, Safety, Environment and Community at NMDPRA, Dr Mustapha Lamorde, disclosed that truck movement should be between 6 am and 6 pm.
‎
‎There should be no night driving. Truck movement should only be between 6 am and 6 pm. Anyone caught violating this rule will face sanctions,” he warned. The warnings were aimed at stopping tanker accidents and the explosions that have claimed hundreds of lives in the recent past.

‎He added that the ban on 60,000 trucks is the full enforcement of safe loading practices and a 10-page checklist covering truck roadworthiness, driver fitness, and safety equipment. On March 1, we began the implementation.

‎“This journey does not stop at 60,000 litres. By Q4 of 2025, no truck should load more than 45,000 litres. The lower the volume, the better the control and response in the event of an accident,” he said.

‎The NMDPRA director also added that petroleum tankers must be colour-coded and properly branded for easy identification and enforcement. “We have also mandated the installation of anti-spill containment kits to reduce the risk of product loss and explosion during accidents,” he added.

‎The Zonal Chairman, Petroleum Tanker Drivers arm of NUPENG, Lagos Zone, Comrade Gbolahan, warned drivers against overloading and reckless driving. He said,

Former Niger Delta agitator and Amanyanabo of Torusarama-Piri, Asari Dokubo, has advised youths in Rivers State not to allow themselves be used to promote social vices, warning that such actions could endanger their lives and hinder their ability to achieve their life goals.

Dokubo gave this advice when he received the leadership and members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Rivers State chapter, during a familiarization visit to his residence in Obuama.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Daerefa-A Christopher Braide, Dokubo urged the youths to always uphold peace and resist any attempt by individuals or groups to use them to cause unrest in society.

The traditional ruler also pledged his continuous support for youth development initiatives, encouraging them to reach out to him whenever necessary.

Earlier, the State Chairman of NYCN, Ambrose Sopuruchukwu-Okpor, said the visit was aimed at seeking the blessings of the Amanyanabo and tapping into his vast wealth of wisdom and experience.

He also assured that the NYCN would intensify its sensitisation campaign against social vices for the benefit of the state.

Bello, who is standing trial alongside others accomplices, made the confession in a video recording tendered as evidence at the Kwara State High Court, Ilorin.

Abdulrahman Bello, an Islamic cleric and the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of Hafsoh Yetunde Lawal, a final-year student, shocked the courtroom on Wednesday as he openly confessed to killing the young woman to harvest her for a money ritual.

Bello, who is standing trial alongside others accomplices, made the confession in a video recording tendered as evidence at the Kwara State High Court, Ilorin.

However, in the video, he admitted to committing the act alone and stated that he would not have killed Hafsoh if he had access to human body parts through other means.

The chilling testimony formed part of the ongoing trial presided over by Justice Hannah Olushola Ajayi.

The court also heard from Inspector Ayodele Azeez of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), who detailed the police investigation and recovery of disturbing exhibits from Bello’s residence.

“On February 14, 2025, a case of murder and rape was transferred from Oja-Oba Police Division to the State CID,” Azeez testified.

“The first defendant, Abdulrahman Bello of Olunlade, was found in possession of an axe, cutlass, charms, a table, consultation book, blood-filled container, a pair of slippers, and the severed hands of the victim.”

According to the officer, Bello voluntarily gave his statement in the presence of a lawyer, Barrister A.O. Ahmed, who was provided by the police after Bello said he couldn’t afford one.

The statement was both handwritten and recorded on video, later transferred to a compact disk and submitted as evidence.
The defence counsel, Barrister Agbede, objected to the admissibility of the disk, claiming Bello was coerced, but Justice Ajayi ruled the evidence admissible and ordered the video to be played in court.

Inspector Azeez also testified that the police tracked and arrested Bello’s known associates using his call records, which revealed regular contact with the other defendants before and on the day of the murder.

“All five suspects are connected,” Azeez stated.

“The second defendant is Bello’s teacher, the third is the teacher’s student, while the third and fifth defendants are close friends of the first defendant.”

The court was adjourned for recess at exactly 11:32am, with proceedings expected to continue later in the day.
