Workers on Thursday, November 20, 2025, successfully installed a new distribution transformer at the recently completed injection substation in New Owerri—marking another feat in Imo State’s march toward a more stable and autonomous electricity network.
The 33kV/11kV transformer, along with its accompanying high-voltage insulators, was carefully mounted to link the incoming 33kV line with the outgoing 11kV feeders. Once fully energised, the facility will convert medium-voltage power to 11kV and, where required, to 415V for direct community supply.
This will ensure steady electricity delivery to government establishments, schools, residential areas, and commercial zones across New Owerri.
The installation forms a critical component of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s independent power initiative, designed to establish a functional, round-the-clock electricity system across all 27 local government areas. Beyond improving reliability, the new infrastructure is projected to reduce system losses, strengthen voltage stability, and create a stronger backbone for future grid expansion.
With the transformer now in place and the substation nearing activation, New Owerri residents, businesses, and service institutions are set to enjoy far more dependable power—paving the way for accelerated economic activity and improved quality of life throughout the state.
