Niger: Bandits kill one, abduct several in fresh attacks

Armed bandits have attacked several villages in Shiroro and Munya Local Government Areas of Niger State, killing one person, kidnapping several others, and rustling an unconfirmed number of cattle.

This was contained in a post by security analyst Zagazola Makama on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday.

According to intelligence sources, the attack in Shiroro LGA occurred at about 2:15 p.m. on February 22, when bandits on motorcycles stormed Kutako Makera and Galadiman-Kogo villages.

“The attackers killed a 75-year-old resident, Bansi Kutako, before abducting multiple villagers and making away with livestock,” Makama stated.

In a separate incident, bandits invaded Hayin-Dogo village in Munya LGA at around 3:50 a.m. on February 23, kidnapping five residents, including two women.

The victims have been identified as: Adamu Danfulani, Umar Sanda, Murtala Tailor, Aisha Rabiu and Ramatu Murtala, 26.

Following the attacks, joint security forces, including the military, police, vigilantes, and DSS special hunters, have been deployed to track the criminals, rescue the abducted persons, and recover stolen livestock.

​In furtherance of his commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment during the festive period, the Inspector-General has directed Commissioners of Police and Tactical Commanders across all states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory to implement robust security arrangements.
​Operational measures include:
​Strategic deployment of tactical teams and intelligence operatives.

​Deployment of the Special Intervention Squad and conventional police personnel to Eid prayer grounds and critical infrastructure.
​Increased presence at highways, motor parks, recreational centers, and other public spaces to ensure peaceful, hitch-free celebrations.

​The IGP has also ordered heightened visibility policing, coordinated patrols, enhanced surveillance operations, and intelligence-led stop-and-search duties. These actions are aimed at proactively deterring criminal activities and ensuring a swift response to any emerging threats.

​IGP Disu calls on members of the public to remain vigilant, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the following emergency lines:
