Niger Jailbreak: FG Yet To Publish Details Of Fleeing Inmates.
The Federal Government has not yet released the database containing the details and photographs of the 105 inmates who escaped from the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, Niger State, despite the 72-hour timeframe since the prison break.
A downpour on Wednesday night wreaked havoc on the custodial centre resulting in extensive damage to the facility and facilitating the escape of 119 inmates.
The downpour caused severe damage to the custodial centre’s infrastructure, including a breach in the perimeter fence, allowing inmates to flee.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, after inspecting the damage highlighted the need for reforms in over 240 custodial centres nationwide.
Tunji-Ojo pledged the Federal Government’s dedication to bringing the remaining fleeing inmates back into custody.
Ten fleeing inmates were earlier recaptured on Thursday morning and by evening, four additional fleeing inmates were arrested.
The spokesperson for the NCoS in charge of the Kuje and Suleja medium security custodial centres in Abuja, and Niger State, Adamu Duza, told our correspondent on Thursday that the service would soon display the names and pictures of the fleeing inmates.
However, a source close to the Minister of Interior, who spoke to our correspondent on Saturday, claimed the NCoS was working on the database of the fleeing inmates for publication.
He said, “The NCoS is working on the database of the fleeing inmates. That is all I know about it. Once it is ready, I will let you know.”
Efforts to get the spokesperson for NCoS, Umar Abubakar, on the subject matter proved abortive as he ignored our correspondent’s call, and was yet to respond to his WhatsApp message after viewing it.

As of Sunday morning, our correspondent observed that the names and pictures of the 105 fleeing inmates were still not published on the websites of the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Ministry of Interior.
Faulting the delay in the display of the database of the fleeing inmates from the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, a security expert, Chidi Omeje, blamed the ineffective security system in the country, adding that, “What happened was not a jailbreak. Rain fell, and the wall collapsed. But the first thing they would have done within 24 hours after the incident was to post the pictures and the names of the fleeing inmates.
“The NCoS is the heart of the security infrastructure in Nigeria because every security agency has something to do with prisons. The delay showed that there is no proper record of inmates in Nigeria.”
Another security expert, Oladele Fajana, expressed concern that the pictures of the escapees have not been released so that the public can help the security agencies identify them for easy capture.
Fajana noted, “I am really concerned. I think the Ministry of Interior needs to rise up to the challenge and quickly publish their pictures through the NCoS so that the public can know and identify them for the security agencies to re-arrest them.
“By now, their pictures are supposed to be everywhere; if not, they would become a terror to the nation.”

Detailed report on the kidnap! of HRH, Eze Francis Igwe
He was attending an Assemblies of God church close to his palace in Ikwo when a syndicate of gunmen assailed and picked him and zoomed off to a location in Izziㅡa community under Abakaliki LGA where they kept him. There was no security hiccup as they headed for their camp using a tricycle ㅡ keke-napep. The kidnap! happened last Sunday.
The man who was 80-something years of age, was a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly before 1996 that Ebonyi was created. He was the father of the immediate past deputy governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Barr Kelechi Igwe, PhD and father-in-law to the current chairman of Ikwo LGA, Chief Barr Sunday Nwankwo as well as the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike community, Ikwo LGA. A representative of Ikwo stakeholders approached and reported the incident to “Ili Noyo” ㅡ a deity owned by Ikwo clan. The kidnappers made a phone call to the family requesting that they be given N500K to get drugs for him. They provided a Zenith bank account for the transaction.
The transaction was made. A query was placed on the account, necessitating the owner to go to bank and sort it out. He was captured. During interrogation, he admitted that it was Sinbad Ogbuatu the current APC state publicity secretary in Ebonyi that contacted him to provide an account number for the transaction. Sinbad was arrested and queried. Sinbad said that it was one of his boys that told him to look for a bank account to receive the money. Rather than providing his own account, he looked for another person’s, knowing full well how dangerous the transaction seemed. He was used to lure the boy he called his boy. The two of them came to answer the call of Sinbad their boss unbeknownst to them the danger looming. They were captured and asked the whereabouts of the man. They said that the man di ..ed in their custody. They led security operatives to where they kept him. His decomposing corpse! was exhumed and deposited in a morgue in Abakaliki. Police will arraign the seven of them including Sinbad next week.
The above was what happened.

Gunmen attack Amaechi’s convoy in Rivers, set ADC office ablaze
Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Friday, called on security agencies to identify and arrest miscreants who attacked his convoy and set fire to the office of the African Democratic Congress in Ubima community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
It was gathered that gunmen, on Friday, attacked Amaechi’s convoy on the road between Ubima and Omuanwa in Ikwerre LGA.
The former Rivers State governor was in his community for his e-registration as a member of the ADC.
However, before Amaechi arrived in the community around 12:15 pm on Friday, suspected thugs had already mounted a roadblock, turning back buses identified as conveying ADC members attending the visit.
The thugs had earlier, on Thursday night, set ablaze the ward office of the ADC in Ubima, Amaechi’s hometown.
The miscreants, who reportedly invaded the community with heavy firepower to stop the former governor’s visit, shot sporadically into the community and riddled the gate of Amaechi’s family house with bullets.
However, when the ADC leader eventually arrived to enter the community, the armed thugs reportedly stopped his convoy, but security operatives in his team engaged the attackers.
When the security operatives displayed superior firepower, the armed thugs fled into the bushes.
Addressing hundreds of party members and supporters who were present to witness the e-registration exercise, Amaechi called for calm.
He thanked the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services, and the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for their swift intervention during the attack on his convoy.
Amaechi, who spoke after taking a tour of the burnt party office, said the security agencies showed professionalism in their response.
He urged members of the party not to resort to violence, noting that it was the responsibility of the police to unravel, arrest, and prosecute those behind the attacks.
“I will thank the commissioner of police and the director of DSS. They showed a lot of professionalism immediately I made contact with them.
“In fact, I wasn’t expecting that kind of cooperation. I thought they would be behind these criminals and not render support. But all of us will agree that the police came out, the NSCDC came, DSS came out.
“So we are grateful to them. I’m grateful to them, especially those of them who are here,” Amaechi stated.
He added, “But they must also know that this cannot continue. The way they will show us that this cannot continue is that they must prosecute those who are involved in this crime.”
Amaechi also urged the state governor to make efforts to provide adequate security across the state to avert anarchy.
He encouraged members of the party to commence massive mobilisation, noting that the party’s ultimate target was the presidency.
He said, “I have been a governor, and I know the consequences of not protecting the lives of people. The people will begin to protect their lives by themselves because they don’t want to die.
“But for now, everybody should calm down. Everybody should thank the Commissioner of Police. Everybody should thank the Director of SSS and the Commandant of NSCDC.
“Our role is to be calm, to be peaceful. We are marching to Aso Rock. What they are doing is a distraction. What they are doing will not put food on your table.
“We are hungry. If you are not hungry, tell them I am hungry. People are dropping dead every day because of hunger. And there are a few people who are stealing our money, and they say we should keep quiet.
“We can no longer keep quiet. ADC Rivers State, you must register en masse. You must make sure that we have enough members to surprise them. On election day, they will know whether we will vote or not.”
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said she would obtain details of the incident and revert to our correspondent.
However, she had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report on Friday afternoon.
