Nigeria loses $2bn annually to medical tourism — FG
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, has revealed that Nigeria loses approximately $2 billion annually to medical tourism. He emphasised the urgent need for the country to build health sovereignty and reduce reliance on foreign medical care.
Represented by the Chief Medical Director of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Professor Wasiu Adeyemo, Pate made the statement during the commissioning of Avon Medical Centre, a newly established 50-bed speciality hospital in Surulere, Lagos.
He attributed the staggering loss to a lack of public confidence in the local healthcare system and limited access to quality medical services. Despite this, Pate expressed optimism that facilities like Avon Medical Centre could help reverse the trend.
He noted that the government is committed to revitalising the health sector through initiatives such as the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative and the 2024–2027 Health Sector Strategic Blueprint.
“This is not just about stopping medical tourism. It is about building health sovereignty—the ability of a country to care for its people, and to develop its institutions, talent, and innovation,” Pate stated.
“The government is ready to co-create pathways for private-sector engagement, whether through health insurance expansion, regulatory reform, or partnerships with national health programmes. We welcome Avon Medical and all new private providers as partners in building a healthier, safer, and more equitable Nigeria.”
Also speaking at the event, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors, stressing that the government alone cannot address the challenges in healthcare delivery.“We must create an enabling environment for private equity and investment to thrive,” he said. “Avon Medical has etched its name in the sands of time in this industry—not only in Lagos but across Nigeria.”
In her remarks, Chairperson of Avon Healthcare Limited, Awele Elumelu, highlighted the pressures on Nigeria’s healthcare system caused by a shortage of doctors, hospital beds, and essential equipment.
“In 2009, we took the bold step to make world-class healthcare accessible and affordable for all—not just the privileged few. That decision birthed Avon Medical and Avon HMO,” she said. “Africa carries over 20 percent of the global disease burden, yet has only one percent of healthcare resources
“What we are building is a healthcare system that leaves no one behind. We believe in Afri-capitalism—the idea that the private sector has a responsibility not just to generate profit but to create lasting impact.”

Nigerian Schoolteacher Leaves Classroom After 13 Years To Sell Suya In London
A Nigerian man, Kolawole Ajayi, has ignited widespread reactions on social media after disclosing that he quit his job as a nursery and primary school teacher in Nigeria to pursue a full-time career as a suya seller in London.
Ajayi’s story gained attention following a viral interview on TikTok by @Onijekujelondon, where he was seen preparing suya while recounting his transition from the classroom to entrepreneurship abroad.
In the interview, Ajayi disclosed that he spent 13 years working as a teacher in Nigeria while running a suya business as a side hustle.
He said he also explored other income streams, including YouTube content creation, catering and barbecue services.
According to him, financial realities ultimately influenced his decision to quit teaching.
“I was doing it for like 13 years as a side hustle. I was cooking, doing YouTube videos, catering for people, and doing barbecues.
“When my passive income became about half of my salary, I decided to leave my nursery job and focus on this full-time,” he said.
Ajayi explained that as the suya business expanded, it became more profitable and sustainable than his teaching job, prompting his full transition into entrepreneurship.
He noted that the journey has not been without challenges, recalling incidents such as unfavourable weather conditions that disrupted his business, including a moment when strong winds scattered his suya pepper.
The viral video has generated mixed reactions online. While some users praised his courage and resilience, others expressed criticism.
One TikTok user, @MrsHil, claimed to have personal knowledge of Ajayi, writing, “He managed my children’s nursery. Nice to see him thriving.”
However, other commenters shared less favourable opinions. A business owner, Non Tarnish Jewelry Store, said they admired his YouTube content but described their personal interaction with him as disappointing.
Another user, @Venom, claimed Ajayi earned about £140 as a teacher in Nigeria, reigniting debate over teachers’ welfare and salaries in the country.
Some social media users also questioned the quality of his food, while others raised concerns about hygiene during the interview.

“If You Try It This Year, You Won’t Survive” — Pastor Nathaniel Issues Warning To Married Men Chasing Young Women (Video)
Pastor Nathaniel Bassey has delivered a strong warning to married men who seek romantic relationships with young women outside their marriages.
In a sermon delivered recently, the pastor cautioned that any man engaging in deceitful relationships with young women would face divine consequences.
“If you try it this year, you won’t survive. Your shame will not be forgotten. It will be on social media,” Bassey stated, emphasising the spiritual accountability of such actions.
He continued, highlighting scenarios where married men lure women to hotels under false pretenses.
“If you take a woman to a hotel, you lie, meanwhile you are married, you will not come out from that hotel,” he warned.
The pastor also addressed women, urging them to recognize when a man is married and to avoid greed or attention-seeking that could compromise their values.
Bassey stressed that God’s grace should guide all interactions and that both men and women must take responsibility for their choices.
“You know in your heart that he is married, but because of greed, because of attention, you want to carry bag. If you try it, you won’t survive it,” he added, urging listeners to uphold integrity and moral discipline in relationships.

How Boko Haram Leader, Terrorism Financing Suspects Were Released – Retired Army General Laments
A retired Nigerian Army Major General, Danjuma Hamisu Ali-Keffi, has demanded a thorough investigation into the release of 48 suspects linked to terrorism financing, including a figure flagged by foreign intelligence agencies as a senior Boko Haram leader, who were earlier held by the military.
Ali-Keffi, who was appointed in October 2020 by former President Muhammadu Buhari to lead the covert Operation Service Wide (OSW), said the circumstances surrounding the release raised serious national security concerns.
OSW was tasked with investigating terrorism financiers and collaborators and comprised personnel from the military, intelligence and security agencies, as well as legal officers from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.
Speaking in an interview with SaharaReporters, Ali-Keffi disclosed that the task force collaborated with about 33 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom and European Union, under the cover of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
He alleged that the National Assembly failed to probe the matter due to what he described as compromise involving a former Army chief.
The retired general said OSW arrested 48 individuals identified as terrorism financiers, including one described as a principal Boko Haram leader by Western and Middle Eastern intelligence agencies.
“A significant amount of the huge funds meant for counterterrorism were shared amongst prominent military and government officials including National Assembly members and others,” he said.
“Putting the terrorism financing suspects on trial would have exposed the misappropriation of these counterterrorism funds and all the beneficiaries. That is why nothing has been done.”
He alleged that the NFIU traced large sums of counterterrorism funds diverted through some of the arrested suspects who operated Bureau De Change firms as fronts.
“These funds were laundered on behalf of top military and government officials,” Ali-Keffi said. “We should not forget that these same suspects also moved funds for Boko Haram operations.”
Ali-Keffi questioned the release of Hima Abubakar, whose $600 million account was allegedly traced by the NFIU to an offshore account.
“First, who ordered the release of the 48 terror financing suspects held in military custody? All those who played a part should be identified,” he said.
“Secondly, why were they released without being put on trial?”
“Thirdly, why did the government request the US to unfreeze the $600m of Hima Abubakar traced by the NFIU to an overseas offshore account?”
He recalled that Abubakar had been declared wanted by Nigerian and Nigerien authorities and was earlier indicted by the Committee on Defence and Arms Procurement (CADEP) for irregularities in arms procurement.
“So why did we request the US to unfreeze his account after CADEP found him liable of owing the country a huge amount of money?” he asked.
Ali-Keffi also expressed concern over the release of Alhaji Saidu Ahmed, also known as Saidu Gold, who he said was identified as a top Boko Haram leader.
“It is laughable that Saidu Gold was released from Army detention and allowed to walk free despite the abundance of evidence OSW had,” he said.
He referenced intelligence documents from the United Arab Emirates, which allegedly showed that Saidu Gold recruited six individuals later jailed in Dubai for terrorism-related offences.
“Yet, for some insane reasons, we didn’t even put him on trial,” he added.
The retired general further recalled that the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, had initiated a forensic audit into counterterrorism funds and unexecuted procurement projects.
“He died three days before he was to act on the report,” Ali-Keffi said, alleging that the audit was suppressed to conceal fund diversion.
Ali-Keffi called for a full-scale investigation into the handling of terrorism financing cases and counterterrorism funds.
“If the NFIU under OSW should ever make its investigations public, I can assure you there will be a tsunami in Nigeria,” he said.
“Many military and government officials, including distinguished members of the National Assembly, would be implicated.”
