Nigeria Police engages stakeholders in protection of schools

Following the prevailing security challenges being faced across the Federation, the Nigeria Police Force has initiated a move to establish security operations within school premises in order to enhance adequate protection of students and academic structures.

The initiative was led by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun during a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Nigeria Police In conjunction with other security agencies in Owerri, Imo State capital.

The IGP, who was represented by AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu in charge of Zone 9 Umuahia, said that the summit is part of the Nigeria Police Force’s Safe School Initiative.

He harped on the critical role of Community Policing in safeguarding educational institutions across the country.

The summit brought together teachers, security experts, civil society organizations, and government officials, all focused on creating safe learning environments.

The initiative, according to Uzuegbu, underscores the IGP’s commitment to addressing security challenges like cultism, kidnapping, and violence, which he said threaten students’ safety and educational progress.

The event was officially opened by the Governor of the State, Hope Uzodinma, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Cosmos Iwu, who highlighted the urgent need for secured school environments and expressed confidence in the summit’s potential for concrete actions.

In his speech, the State Police Commissioner, CP Danjuma reaffirmed the State Police Command’s commitment to collaborating with other security agencies and Community leaders to secure schools in the state.

CP Abayomi Shogunle, National Coordinator of the School Protection Squad, SPS, at Force Headquarters, provided an overview of the Safe School Initiative.

He highlighted its objectives and strategic approach, stressing the importance of building security resilience in schools and involving host communities in safeguarding educational institutions.

The summit featured key presentations, including “Security Awareness: Early Warning and Response Systems” by Professor Daniel Nkwuocha of Imo State University and “The Role of Students in Building Secure Schools” by ACP Linus Nwaiwu.

The spokesperson of the State Police command, DSP Henry Okoye stated that the event reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to collaborating with partners to ensure that schools in Imo State remain safe environments for students’ education.

Edo Governor appoints Eunice Omonzejie as new AAU VC

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved the appointment of Professor Eunice Omonzejie as the new Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Umar Ikhilo, who disclosed that the appointment takes immediate effect.

According to the statement, Omonzejie’s selection followed the submission of three shortlisted candidates by the university’s governing council.

Professor Omonzejie, an accomplished scholar in French and Francophone African Literatures, has built an extensive academic career at the Department of Modern Languages, AAU.

Her research spans African and Francophone literary studies, gender discourse, and cultural studies.

She has previously served as President of the AAU chapter of the National Association of Women Academics, NAWACS, where she championed mentorship, research initiatives, and advocacy for women in academia.

Omonzejie is widely published and has co-edited works such as French Language in Nigeria: Essays in Honour of UFTAN Pacesetters and Language Matters in Contemporary West Africa.

She is also the author of Women Novelists in Francophone Black Africa: Views, Reviews and Interviews.

The Edo State Government described her appointment as a recognition of her outstanding academic achievements, leadership qualities, and dedication to the advancement of the institution.

The government congratulated Professor Omonzejie and charged her to deploy her expertise and experience to strengthen AAU’s vision of producing globally competitive graduates while driving innovation and research.

68 inmates in Kano pass 2025 NECO exam

The Nigerian Correctional Service in Kano State has announced that 68 inmates successfully passed the 2025 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by NECO.

In a statement released by the Service, the inmates described the achievement as life-changing. They said it gives them a chance to rebuild their lives and hope for a better future.

According to the Correctional Service, the success was made possible with the support of the Kano State Government, which sponsored the educational programs for the inmates.

“This initiative is in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act of 2019, which focuses on reformation and rehabilitation of inmates through education and vocational training,” the statement read.

The Kano State Government also reaffirmed its commitment to providing educational opportunities for inmates so they can return to society as responsible citizens.

Officials noted that this effort is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which aims to improve the lives of all Nigerians, including those serving prison terms.

UNILAG faculty president drowns in Lagos beach

The University of Lagos, UNILAG, has been thrown into deep mourning following the untimely death of Balogun Damilola, the President of the Faculty of Education.

According to multiple social media reports, the tragedy occurred on Saturday, September 20, 2025, when Damilola was swept away by a strong wave during a beach outing in Lagos.

Witnesses said the student leader, popularly known as Ayanfe Eledumare, was attempting a backflip near the shoreline while recording a video when he was suddenly pulled into the sea. Efforts to save him reportedly failed, and his body was discovered the following morning at Museyo Beach, Ibeju-Lekki, about two kilometres from where the incident took place.

The devastating news has triggered an outpouring of grief across the UNILAG community, with students and friends paying tribute to Damilola’s vibrant personality and promising leadership.

He had only recently assumed office as Faculty President after serving as Vice President the previous year.
One of his close associates and former roommate, identified on X as Doyindoski, wrote: “He was my roommate. Always brought Lacoco and the likes to the room. A real vibe, man. And bro just became the President of his faculty… RIP Balogun Damilola.”

As of Monday afternoon, the university authorities and local security agencies were yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
