NYA demands release of ‘abducted’ Imo chairman, preaches good governance

Published

on

A frontline movement, National Youth Alliance (NYA), has frowned at the gestapo style abduction of its Imo state chairman, Mr. Chinonso Uba, also known as Nonsonkwa on October 20, 2024.

NYA President, Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas in a statement on Monday October 21, 2024, said the Imo state government and the state police command should be ready to arrest all the youth if Nonsonkwa is not released unconditionally.

According to the statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson, made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Monday, NYA insisted that if Nonsonkwa had committed an offense, there are constitutional ways he could have been invited by the police, instead of abducting him by blocking his vehicle on the road.

It described the statement issued by the Imo State Police Command, signed by its Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Okoye Henry, as watery, insisting that NYA Imo state chairman is being persecuted for his believe in human rights protection and good governance, which he has always advocated through his programme on radio as an On Air Personality (OAP).

“The statement by the Imo: Police Command alleging that he was arrested over “Cyberstalking, Character Defamation, Misinformation And Inciting Civil Unrest” is not only laughable, but Undemocratic.

“It is expected that if indeed he was engaged in any of the above allegations, what stops the police from inviting him, instead of the abduction by plain clothes operatives.

“We are using this medium to call on the Inspector General of Police to call his men to order to either release him unconditionally, or charge him to a competent court,” the statement said.

It added that the Operatives of the Imo State Police Command claimed that they arrested Nonsonkwa on October 20, 2024, following a written petition from a concerned citizen regarding viral videos.

“The Command denied that he was not abducted and is currently detained at State Headquarters and will be arraigned in court with appropriate charges once a comprehensive investigation is completed, we find that as Undemocratic and insist he should be released unconditionally,” it said.

Police probe viral video of officer mobbed over theft allegation

The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a uniformed officer being assaulted by a mob over an allegation of stealing.

The video, which began circulating on Wednesday, captured the officer with blood pouring from his mouth as he sat on the ground surrounded by an angry crowd.

Visibly distressed and pleading, the officer, still in his uniform, appeared helpless as dozens of onlookers held up their phones to record the scene.

While voices in the background repeatedly accused him of theft, the specific offense remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

At one point in the footage, another officer attempted to intervene, pushing through the crowd in a bid to rescue his colleague.

The mob continued chanting “Ole! (Thief)” in Yoruba as commercial vehicles and tricycles moved slowly around the scene.

A yellow commercial bus with the inscription “Ayedade” was also visible, suggesting the incident occurred in a busy Lagos axis.

Reacting to the circulating footage, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, said the command had commenced efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and confirm the officer’s identity.

Adebisi wrote on X, ”The command has seen the viral video.

“We are investigating to determine the full circumstances and confirm the identity of the officer. Updates will follow soon.”

Recall the Nigerian Police Force had urged the public to refrain from mob justice, reiterating that allegations, whether against civilians or security operatives, must be handled through lawful channels.

Ekwutosblog Online had reported that the Plateau State Police Command confirmed the arrest of 18 individuals in connection with the killing of a police officer simply known as Inspector Jeremiah and a suspect during a mob attack in Bassa Local Government Area.

It was gathered that the mob attack occurred when police officers attempted to apprehend a suspect accused of intimidation, trespass, and farm encroachment.
